King Henry reigns supreme for the Magpies

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester Town's first pre-season friendly at the Avenue Stadium ended in victory thanks to an inspired performance by home debutant Charlie Henry.

The 22-year-old scored two and looked dangerous throughout as the Magpies beat Sydenhams Wessex Premier outfit AFC Totton 3-2.

Henry, signed from Cambridge City earlier this month, was pleased with his display. "I'm very happy with my performance, I thought the team did well too.

"It was pleasing to do so well in my first game in front of the home fans. However, I feel I should have scored more goals."

The attacking midfield player had at least 10 efforts at goal and was denied by the woodwork on two occasions.

It was the visitors though who made the first breakthrough of the game just before the half-hour mark thanks to a somewhat strange own goal by Magpies' skipper Alex Browne.

Following Nathan Peprah-Annan's challenge on Fouad Hamodu in the area Browne may have thought the referee was about to award a penalty, then, under minimal pressure from Totton's Ousmane Drame, Browne lashed the ball past his keeper Simon Evans and the goal was awarded.

It wasn't until the 40th minute that Dorchester levelled. A great cross by Mark Jermyn found the impressive Henry at the back post who powered his header into the top corner leaving visiting goalkeeper Gareth Barfoot with no chance.

Just four minutes later the home side were ahead after a neat turn and shot by Jamie Gleeson in the area. Gleeson capitalised after Matt Groves failed to get a hold of Ryan Hill's cross.

The second half was very much about one man, and after three great efforts in succession Henry got his reward with a brilliant strike from 20 yards that left Barfoot scrambling and the Magpies 3-1 up.

Last year's beaten FA Vase finalists pulled themselves back into the game with little over 10 minutes to play thanks to a well taken goal by substitute Mike Gosney, who found himself alone in the area.

The match began to peter out until Henry went close yet again in the final minute.

First team coach Steve Johnson was happy with what he saw. "We're pleased with the performance at the end of a tough week in which we've played three games.

"The attitude of the players has been excellent and they've been working hard in training, so we're happy with the results and performances so far."

Johnson was impressed with Henry's performance in particular. "He's a stick of dynamite that lad.

"Charlie will be a massive asset to this club, as long as we can get him on the ball we will see the best of him."
