Magpies' Whisken woe
by
Terry Spracklen
Former Dorchester trialist Jamie Whisken scored the only goal as
Basingstoke ended Magpies' unbeaten Blue Square South away record.
Whisken pounced on the edge of the penalty area to loop a header
past keeper Darren Behcet after a right-wing corner on the half
hour from Ben Wells had been headed back across goal by Jason Bristow.
Territorially, the Magpies dominated large parts of the match and
created more attempts on goal than their hosts.
But the hard working 'Stoke defence proved resilient and even an
81st minute penalty awarded for a foul on substitute Charlie Henry
by keeper Jonty Venter was saved to deny Dorchester a share of the
spoils.
The Magpies were then reduced to 10 men after substitute Gary Bowles,
who had replaced the injured Roy O'Brien just before half-time,
was sent off for a second bookable offence.
The only notable incident in the first 10 minutes was an injury
sustained by O'Brien in an accidental collision with Behcet which
eventually resulted in the defender's substitution.
The match burst in to life in the 13th minute when Ivan Forbes
won two corners in quick succession and from the second, taken by
Jon Docker, a glanced header from Alex Browne required a clearance
off the line by Steve Laidler.
This let off then sparked the Hampshire side on to the offensive
and Matt Warner's through ball looked inch-perfect but as Behcet
came off his line, Michael Charles pulled his low shot wide of the
far post.
At the other end, Hardy Pinto-Moreira rounded Venter but was forced
wide and his shot deflected for a corner which was also taken by
Docker and met again by Browne, who this time headed on to the top
of the crossbar. Then, played through by Mark Robinson, Pinto-Moreira
turned quickly on the edge of the box but fired over before Docker
sent a 20-yard drive wide.
There was a scare for Dorchester when Scott Fitzgerald's cross
was dropped under pressure by Behcet but in the absence of the referee's
whistle, relief for the travelling Dorchester fans came when Warner
lashed the loose ball wide.
Fitzgerald and Wells both went close as Basingstoke enjoyed their
best spell of sustained pressure and on the half hour they grabbed
the only goal of the game as Whisken's looping header found the
far corner.
The Magpies tried to hit back straight away but Mark Jermyn's cross-cum-shot
to the near post was well read by Venter. Then set up by debutant
Brian Dutton, an 18-yard shot from Docker deflected wide.
Dorchester boss Shaun Brooks introduced Henry for Pinto-Moreira
at the start of the second half but it was Browne who again went
close for Dorchester with a powerful header wide following a free-kick
from Docker awarded for a foul on Dutton by Fitzgerald.
One of the Magpies' best chances fell to Jones Awuah who fired
wide from six yards after Henry's header from an Ivan Forbes' cross
rebounded to him off a defender.
And then Dutton won the ball from Ben Surey with a superb tackle
near the right touchline and quickly found Awuah who picked out
Forbes but the Portugese winger fired high over the bar.
A surging left wing run by Forbes was abruptly ended by Jason Bristow,
who surprisingly escaped punishment other than the award of a free-kick
which initially came to nothing, although as 'Stoke failed to clear
their lines, a looping header from Nathan Peprah-Annan was saved
on his line by Venter.
But Basingstoke looked increasingly dangerous as Dorchester committed
more men to the attack.
Wells sent a low angled shot fizzing past the far post while Browne
cleared an awkward cross from Fitzgerald behind for a corner. Then
from Warner's cross, Charles aimed a free header straight at Behcet
while Warner turned Bowles before drilling a shot into the side-netting.
Suddenly Dorchester were thrown a lifeline only seconds after they
had appeals for a penalty waved aside when Elliot Bent appeared
to be tripped.
Browne's ball was aimed at Henry who went down under pressure from
Venter. Referee Carl Berry pointed to the spot this time but took
no further action against Venter who had the last laugh by diving
to his right to smother Henry's penalty kick.
There was then further woe for Dorchester when Bowles was shown
a late red card for his second bookable offence as Basingstoke comfortably
held on to claim maximum points.
