Hopes dashed by Hogg
by
Terry Spracklen
Dorchester's hopes of carving out their first home Blue Square South
win since mid-September were dashed 19 minutes from time when Lewis
Hogg levelled.
The Bath midfielder slammed home a shot from 18 yards to cancel
out Jones Awuah's opener on the hour.
In a goalless but well contested first half, Steve Jones produced
the first goal attempt in the fifth minute with an 18-yard strike
which was saved at his near post by Dorchester keeper Darren Behcet.
Two minutes later, a foul on Awuah presented the Magpies with their
first chance, but James Rowe's free- kick flew just over from 20
yards.
An impressive break from midfield by Ivan Forbes was not matched
by his finish as he rolled the ball slowly and well wide of the
far post.
There was a lucky escape for the Magpies on the quarter hour mark
when the lively Darren Edwards raced on to a long through ball and
shook off the challenge of Bradley Middleton, who was making his
first appearance for the Magpies on loan from Cardiff City.
But Edwards could only drive the ball across goal and wide of
the far upright.
A centre from Dave Gilroy was then met by Edwards whose near post
strike deflected for a corner.
At the other end, Dorchester also went close when an opportunist's
strike from 25 yards by James Rowe saw the ball bounce to safety
off the top of the crossbar.
Dorchester were then handed another good chance in somewhat bizarre
circumstances when Awuah's attempt to run on to a ball played through
by Jon Docker was seemingly thwarted by Matt Coupe's challenge.
But as Coupe steered the ball back towards goal, keeper Paul Evans
picked up the ball and was penalised for handling a back pass, resulting
in a Dorchester free-kick on the six-yard line.
But with the whole Bath City side hugging the goalline, the task
proved too great and as Docker played the free-kick short, the assembled
City masses charged down Rowe's strike.
Behcet then clawed a header from Edwards out of the air while a
shot from Dorchester's Darren Watts deflected for a corner.
The breakthrough came on the hour when substitute Jamie Gleeson,
who had been on the pitch for barely four minutes as a replacement
for Watts, turned a defender just inside the left edge of the penalty
area before striking a low shot across goal to which Awuah applied
a final touch to send the ball nestling into the far corner.
As City tried to hit back, Behcet saved a near post header from
Gilroy then beat down a glanced header from Edwards who met a left
wing centre from City skipper Jim Rollo. Behcet was also equal to
Chris Holland's looping header from Justyn McKay's 70th minute free-
kick.
But when Gilroy's firm low strike cannoned back off the far post
and Mark Jermyn's partial clearance saw the ball only just clear
the penalty area, there was nothing that Behcet could do to keep
out Hogg's follow up shot which flew past him into the far corner.
Late in the game both sides could have sneaked the three points
with Wes Fogden's 20-yard low effort saved by the diving Evans while
in stoppage time, the unmarked Jones fired over the crossbar from
12 yards.
But in the end an entertaining festive derby ended with honours
shared.
