Ex-Terra Luke strikes late to deny Magpies

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Former Weymouth striker Luke Nightingale grabbed a late leveller to deny Dorchester Town their first Blue Square South victory in five games.

Jones Awuah notched his fifth goal of the campaign to give director of football Shaun Brooks' side a 63rd minute lead.

Without playing particularly well, and riding their luck at times, the Magpies looked on course to take all three points until Nightingale pounced five minutes from time.

Brooks was aided on the sidelines by Brian Benjafield after Steve Johnson decided to resign as assistant-manager due to work commitments with the Royal Navy.

Bognor were the only team carving out any real openings in the early exchanges, and the Rocks were unfortunate not to find themselves 3-0 up after just 10 minutes.

When Nathan Simpson failed to get the ball under control inside three minutes David Ray took advantage and jinked his way into the Magpies' area, but his shot came back off Darren Behcet's crossbar. The rebound fell to Alex Haddow but he skied his effort.

Two minutes later indecision between Behcet and Roy O'Brien saw the two collide in their own box. Ex-Terra Nightingale was among the pair and as the ball ran loose for him referee Knapp blew for a foul against the Bognor striker, a decision which appeared harsh.

Dorchester were certainly on the Rocks, as it were, and after Charlie Henry saw a 20-yard effort comfortably saved Ray struck the woodwork once more. Skipper Nightingale headed the ball down beautifully into the path of his team-mate, but Ray couldn't find the back of the net and watched with disbelief as his low shot hit the far post.

Caretaker boss Michael Birming-ham, playing in his first game as player-manager since Jack Pearce's decision to move to general manager at Nyewood Lane, felt the force of a Simpson challenge on 13 minutes and was subsequently replaced just before the half-hour mark with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Ivan Forbes was looking a threat for the hosts whenever he got down the flanks, but after skipping past left back Seb Wallis-Tayler, his low cross towards strike-partner Jones Awuah lacked contact from the Ghanaian as the Magpies looked to get a foothold on proceedings.

On 32 minutes a similar free-kick routine to the one which saw Jamie Gleeson score against Bromley on Saturday was played out after Wes Fogden was fouled, this time though, Gleeson skewed his effort well wide of Craig Stoner's goal.

Sixty seconds after, Awuah almost netted when he beat Stoner to the ball, unfortunately his header lacked power and accuracy.

The second period started as the first finished, very lacklustre, with neither side making any impression on the game.

In the 53rd minute however, Bognor did create an opportunity, but after being put through by Nightingale Haddow chose the wrong option and his pass went astray.

And the visitors were made to pay as Awuah opened the scoring 10 minutes later. Chris Breach failed to clear his lines and Dorchester's number nine profited by beating Stoner to the ball and lifting it over him. The Avenue crowd waited with bated breath before the ball eventually bounced in off the back post.

Forbes then went close on two occasions for the home side. First he drew an excellent save from Stoner with a left-footed bullet, before latching on to an Awuah flick to find himself clean through, however, his shot went agonisingly wide of the Rocks' right post on 71 minutes.

In the midst of the Portuguese forward's chances Awuah struck an upright with an acrobatic swing from an impossible angle.

As with Saturday missed opportunities were to come back and haunt Dorchester.

The warning signs came from Ray, who was thwarted by Behcet, and substitute Scott Marshall, who drove a great opportunity wide.

And with five minutes left on the clock the hosts gave away a needless free-kick 30 yards out. Marshall swung the ball in and after missing everyone it found its way to fellow replacement Charlie Balfe at the back stick.

Balfe tried his luck but couldn't beat the Magpies' keeper, but Behcet's save fell invitingly for Nightingale to poke the ball home unchallenged.

Ahead of last night's game there was a minute's applause for 87-year-old Tom Dufall, a founder member of the supporters' club in 1949, who has sadly passed away.
