Magpies must learn from black day at Brackley
by
Ky Capel
Magpies' director of football Shaun Brooks says
his side will learn from their 4-0 friendly defeat at the hands
of British Gas league outfit Brackley Town on Saturday.
Brooks also said Dorchester were beaten by the better side at St
James' Park, but the scoreline was somewhat flattering.
He said: "It was never a question of our lads not trying -
Brackley played better than us on the day.
"The 4-0 scoreline was generous because we did create some
good chances. However, we conceded silly goals and it hopefully
will act as a wake up call to some.
"We will sit down and look at what went wrong and make sure
we put it right ready for the first match of the season."
Avenue favourite Charlie Henry had the Dorchester faithful concerned
when he limped off the pitch. Brooks though is hopeful he will be
back in action soon.
He added: "Charlie came off with a bruised toe but with a
couple of days' rest he should be back in training on Tuesday hopefully."
The first goal for Brackley came after Nathan Peprah-Annan failed
to clear his lines. Striker Danny Spencer took full advantage and
ran clean through, rounding Magpies' keeper Simon Evans before slotting
the ball home with ease.
A cross from the right by Robbie Beard found Spencer who doubled
his tally thanks to some poor marking in the box.
Before the second goal Matt Groves had a great chance to equalise
for the visitors but his effort was tipped over by Richard Knight.
The game was all but sealed when defender Josh Green side footed
home for the hosts. After the initial corner was cleared, the ball
came back into the Dorchester area and Green profited from a good
knock down.
Substitute Tom Winters then wrapped up the victory with the Northants
outfit's fourth and final goal.
Ahead of tonight's friendly at Hamworthy United (7.45pm), Brooks
is expecting to have a goalkeeper in place.
He said: "We should have a keeper for the Hamworthy match,
he's someone who has been recommended to us. We couldn't agree terms
with Darren Behcet so that avenue is now closed."
