Ravens rock Magpies

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

After staging a stunning comeback from two goals down in their last outing, Dorchester found themselves on the wrong end of an emphatic turnaround on Saturday as Bromley snatched all three points at the Avenue Stadium despite being 2-0 behind at the interval.

The Magpies raced into a two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Jones Awuah and Jamie Gleeson.

The former pounced on a parry by keeper Andy Walker, and Gleeson fired home following a free-kick routine straight from the training ground.

But the Ravens, inspired by a gung-ho approach from manager Mark Goldberg, staged a remarkable fight-back and condemned Dorchester to their fifth home defeat of the season with goals from Nic McDonnell, Danny Hockton and Garath McCleary.

Bromley came out and bossed possession in the early exchanges but failed to make any inroads on Darren Behcet's goal.

An unchanged Magpies side had the first real sniff at goal when Charlie Henry almost capitalised on a poor clearance by Andy Walker.

Henry's subsequent shot, which looked goal-bound, was blocked though by Tutu Henriques to save the blushes of the Ravens' stopper.

Then on 14 minutes the hosts took the lead. A good interchange between Wes Fogden and Awuah saw the Brighton loanee's cross parried by Walker straight into the path of the oncoming Awuah, who comfortably smashed home.

The next action saw Dorchester extend their advantage with a cleverly taken free-kick. Awuah was felled and Henry, Fogden and Gleeson set about their masterplan.

Henry and Fogden stood over the ball and fooled everyone before the ball was switched into the path of Gleeson whose left-footed strike flew past Walker and into the top left corner.

Hockton became the first Bromley player to go close on 32 minutes when his curled effort whistled past the far post.

Seven minutes later Behcet was called into action to catch a header from Peter Adeniyi after he climbed highest at the back stick.

A good half from the home side was soon to be forgotten though as Goldberg plotted the turnaround by bringing on McDonnell and McCleary at the break, and switching to a 3-4-3 formation in the process.

In a similar scenario to the one England suffered in midweek, Dorchester were unable to hold on to the ball in the second period and allowed the visitors to advance into their area.

Although the Magpies had withheld any early pressure in the half, that was all about to change on 66 minutes.

After the combination of skipper Alex Browne and keeper Behcet produced an excellent block to deny McCleary, the resulting corner was taken by Barry Moore and, despite having to generate much of the power in his effort, McCleary was on hand to head past Behcet and hand Bromley a lifeline.

Another saving block by Browne denied the visitors an equaliser. But in a frantic 60 seconds the game turned on its head.

Mark Robinson led a Magpies breakaway from a Ravens corner, and found Henry with a well-placed pass. The Dorchester winger then burst towards Bromley's goal only to see his left-footed effort squirm through Walker's body and bobble the wrong side of the far post.

From the subsequent corner, at the second time of asking, Henry whipped the cross in to find Awuah with no defender for company, but the Ghanaian could only divert his header straight at the grateful Walker. Had he converted, it surely would have knocked the stuffing out of the away side.

The Ravens though, flew up the field and Adeniyi led the charge before playing in Hockton to lift the ball over the advancing Behcet and pull his side back on level terms.

Two minutes later the comeback was complete, and deservedly so, as McCleary found himself with enough room to drill his effort low, beyond the outstretched palm of Behcet.

The only response Dorchester offered was through substitute Hardy Pinto-Moreira, but he was to be thwarted on two occasions as the hosts tried desperately to find parity.

However, the Ravens came closest to adding to the score-sheet in the final few minutes as Behcet denied Henriques before McDonnell hit a post having dashed past two home defenders.

With three away points in the bag, the 1,000 attendance target not met, and a Bromley fan winning the big raffle prize, it was certainly a day to forget for the county town side.
