Magpies bitten by Crabb

Dorset Echoby David Briers

A star performance from Eastbourne's Nathan Crabb ensured Dorchester suffered their 14th Blue Square South defeat of the season to maintain their relegation worries.

The Magpies produced a spirited second half display but lacked a cutting edge against title-chasing Eastbourne who cut Lewes' lead at the top to six points courtesy of this 4-1 victory.

The home side got off to a dream start and took the lead in the fourth minute.

Nathan Crabb's pace forced a corner which brother Matt floated to the far post.

Ex-Bognor man Darren Budd found some space and his deflected left-footed shot flashed into the net past Simon Evans.

Nathan Crabb's speed was a constant menace to the Dorchester rearguard.

He hit one into the side-netting before setting up Boro captain Paul Armstrong who volleyed against a post.

Nathan Crabb dragged another opportunity wide and Armstrong rattled Evans' near post once again as Boro looked for a deserved second.

Dorchester struggled to gain any forward momentum and Darren Watts' long-range effort, which was easily gathered by Lee Hook, was their only effort of note from a tough first half.

The visitors introduced Ivan Forbes and Elliot Bent after the interval but it was the home side who began with intent.

Bradley Middleton was at his defensive best to deny Andy Atkin a certain goal but Eastbourne's second soon arrived.

On 51 minutes a defensive slip-up let in Nathan Crabb and the striker bravely beat Evans to the ball and forced it into the empty net.

The Dorchester defence was sliced open once again on 62 minutes. Chief tormentor Nathan Crabb's shot was blocked by Evans but Atkin was on hand to fire in the rebound.

Jones Awuah pulled one back from Jon Docker's near-post corner as the visitors enjoyed a brief spell of pressure.

The Magpies forced a flurry of corners and Awuah was unlucky to see his chip rebound off the top of the bar as the home defence became increasingly ragged on a sticky surface.

But Eastbourne rode out the mini-storm and added to their lead in the 90th minute.

Substitute Dominic Douglas, who had been on the pitch for just three minutes, scored when he rounded Evans and smashed the ball in off the cross bar.
