Hann haunts Dorchester
by
Terry Spracklen
Matt Hann piled further misery on struggling Dorchester when he
came off the bench to score Eastleigh's third goal and condemn his
former side to another Blue Square South defeat.
The Spitfires earned their 13th league victory of the season at
the Sparshatt Stadium to keep them in sight of a play-off place
and ensured the county town side remained second from bottom of
the table.
Following a low-key first half, it was the Magpies who dominated
early play after the break to take a 52nd minute lead when Anthony
Riviere inadvertently turned Jon Docker's low shot past his own
keeper.
But Eastleigh pulled themselves level through Paul Sales before
Hann, who replaced fellow ex-Magpie Jamie Brown, then scored the
goal which put the Spitfires in the driving seat.
Dorchester's assistant-manager, Paul Compton, introduced all three
of his recent signings to his starting line-up - Torquay keeper
Martin Horsell, on loan Salisbury midfielder Danny Clay and former
Yeovil striker Tom Clarke.
There were only four attempts on goal in the first half but it
was evident that there was a renewed determination in the Magpies'
camp.
The goal attempt came from Jones Awuah in the second minute but
20-year-old Eastleigh keeper David Wilkinson, making his home debut
on loan from Crystal Palace, made a good stop at his near post.
Roy O'Brien then sent a long free-kick forward which Awuah could
not prevent going out of play for a goal kick.
There was a moment of anguish for Horsell when Peter Adeniyi charged
down his clearance but the ball rebounded away from goal allowing
the Dorchester stopper to complete the clearance at the second attempt.
Jake Smeaton picked out new boy Clarke whose cross aimed for Awuah
was well read by Wilkinson who won the race to the ball.
Eastleigh's first attempt of the game came from Fitzroy Simpson
whose 20-yard snapshot flew high over the bar.
At the other end, a Smeaton cross was dropped by Wilkinson who
was able to react quicker than the nearest Magpie, Clarke.
Dorchester suffered a blow when Gary Bowles, who had been enjoying
a good game at right-back, limped off with a calf injury to replaced
by Jamie Cumming in the 23rd minute.
Eastleigh's best chance of the first half came ten minutes before
the break when Mark Jermyn's chested clearance was intercepted by
Mark Marshall.
His cross was met by Sales who produced a downward effort which
bounced up over the bar.
A foul by Clay on Brown gifted the Spitfires a free-kick on the
edge of the box but former Terra Andy Harris blasted the ball into
the wall.
In stoppage time, Clarke found Docker whose shot was saved by Wilkinson.
The Magpies enjoyed the early part of the second half and took
a 52nd minute lead when Clay spotted Docker in space on the left
wing and he charged forward before drilling an angled shot towards
goal which clipped off Riviere wrong-footing Wilkinson.
The visitors went close again three minutes later when James Rowe
played in Jermyn on the right edge of the penalty area but the Magpies'
skipper curled his 18-yard shot just the wrong side of the far post.
Adeniyi looked to be clean through on goal as he latched on to
a long Wilkinson clearance but a moment's hesitation, in checking
his run, allowed Horsell the chance to save bravely at his feet.
Another route one ball from the home keeper was chased by Forbes
whose attempted lob was clawed to safety by Horsell.
Clarke then found himself with a free run on goal but was foiled
by Wilkinson who scooped up his low shot.
That miss proved costly as two minutes later the Spitfires levelled
the scores when Horsell fumbled a Adeniyi centre under pressure
and Sales scrambled home the loose ball from close range.
Eastleigh manager Ian Baird threw on Hann for the last 25 minutes
and the Spitfires' confidence soared.
A downward header from fellow substitute David Hughes bounced awkwardly
but was saved by Horsell.
Dorchester were committed to attack and were caught on the break
when a superb through ball from Adeniyi enabled Hann to race through
unchallenged and fire a low shot past Horsell to give the Spitfires
a 69th minute lead.
Marshall then fired another chance wide of the near post.
But despite withstanding some strong pressure from the home side,
Dorchester went close to snatching an equaliser in the 76th minute
when substitutes Tareq Khalil and Alex Browne combined with the
latter's 12-yard header from the former's right-wing centre required
a goalline clearance from Forbes.
But any hopes of the Magpies salvaging a point were dashed nine
minutes from time when Horsell twice miskicked outside of his box.
The loose ball was picked up by Hann who charged forward and then
went down under the challenge of Jermyn but with the flag raised
by his assistant for a foul, referee Nigel Lugg allowed play to
continue as Riviere seized possession and crossed beyond the now
retreated Horsell for Sales to tap home a third goal.
With a two-goal cushion and the momentum of play also in Eastleigh's
favour, the size of the task was now too great for the Magpies although
Awuah was only just off target with a glancing header from Khalil's
84th minute cross.
