Ryan adds to Avenue woe
by
Ky Capel
The Avenue Stadium blues continued for Dorchester Town with a 1-0
defeat at the hands of Eastleigh yesterday.
A Warren Ryan goal in first-half stoppage time separated the two
sides when a draw would have been the fairer result.
The Magpies though, failed to take their chances and suffered their
third defeat out of three on home soil in the Blue Square South.
Dorchester controlled the early exchanges and almost found a breakthrough
when James Rowe's shot was nearly deflected in by the outstretched
foot of frontman Jones Awuah.
Just a minute later and the Spitfires had an opportunity themselves,
but Ryan blazed over after good work by the impressive Damian Scannell
down the right flank.
With plenty of long-range efforts failing to test either keeper
it looked like it would take a stroke of good fortune to break the
deadlock.
And the away side felt rather unfortunate in the 22nd minute not
to get a penalty when Paul Sales' header appeared to strike skipper
Alex Browne's hand as the two jumped in the area. Referee Martin
waved away the Spitfires' appeals.
Elliot Bent hit Dorchester's first shot on target with a great
effort on the corner of the box.
After collecting the ball from Mark Jermyn, the 18-year-old cut
inside on his left foot and smashed an inswinging drive, which James
Pullen managed to claw away for a corner.
A major turning point in the game as far as the Magpies were concerned
came on 35 minutes when James Rowe collided with Sales.
The midfield man, who looked solid in the centre, took a heavy
knock to his knee and despite his best efforts could not carry on
and was replaced six minutes later by Matt Groves.
This upset the shape of the Magpies team as they lacked strength
in the middle of the park. Although they could have taken the lead
when Jon Docker's free-kick found Bent at the back stick but, having
got the ball on to his left foot, he screwed his shot wide. With
that chance gone the Eastleigh breakthrough shortly followed.
Sixty seconds after making a save, from Sales' header, reminiscent
of the one Gordon Banks made to deny Pele in the 1970 World Cup,
keeper Darren Behcet came out too far to try and claim a Danny Smith
cross.
The loanee stopper was out-jumped on the edge of his area by Ryan
who rose high to nod the ball goalwards, and with no-one at home,
the ball found the top corner of the Magpies' net to give Ryan his
first goal in Eastleigh colours.
The county town side were unlucky to find themselves a goal down
going into the break, but their second half performance was no match
for that in the first.
Charlie Henry, who enjoyed a lot of possession in the first period,
rarely saw the ball after the interval.
However, two minutes into the second half, after Scannell wasted
a great chance for the visitors, Henry did go close when through
on goal but he struck his shot wide of Pullen's right-hand post.
Arguably Dorchester's best opening fell to Bent once more. Docker's
pin-point delivery from a dead ball found the forward all on his
own in the box, but the former Fulham man saw his header go over
the crossbar.
Eastleigh began to take control, and after Groves went close with
a header, Behcet produced another brilliant save at the far post
to deny Andy Forbes' diving header.
The Magpies almost snatched a point at the death, but Browne's
header from Docker's corner was blocked in front of goal by substitute
Ellis Green.
