Exeter two good for Magpies
by
Ky Capel
Dorchester Town lost their first match of pre-season
to Blue Square Premier outfit Exeter City at the Avenue Stadium
tonight.
The Magpies were two down at half-time, then a goal straight after
the break from new signing Elliot Bent gave the home side hope,
but last year's beaten play-off finalists held out comfortably for
the win.
Director of football Shaun Brooks said there were lots of positives
to come out of the game despite the defeat. "It was a good
work out for the lads against a good, solid side and we will take
a lot out of the game."
"The boys were slightly disappointed at half-time, and certainly
upped the tempo at the start of the second period and we definitely
went on and played better.
"It was nice to see Elliot get a goal against higher league
opposition. It will give him plenty of confidence ahead of the new
season."
Besides two Roy O'Brien efforts from outside the area, one of which
forced visiting keeper Andy Marriott into action, the only real
chance for the Magpies in the first half fell to Jamie Gleeson on
24 minutes.
But from Mark Jermyn's deep cross the midfielder put his far-post
header wide of Andy Marriott's goal.
Paul Tisdale's men took the lead just before the half-hour mark
when Richard Logan's 20-yard shot clipped Magpies skipper Alex Browne
as he slid in to block and the ball beat Simon Evans' outstretched
hand to open the scoring.
A minute before the interval Adam Stansfield put the Grecians two
up. Seven minutes after missing a similar chance, the forward made
no mistake as he shot across Evans and inside the post having beaten
the offside trap to latch onto Matt Gill's lofted pass.
Brooks' half-time team talk seemed to do the trick as two minutes
after the re-start Elliot Bent, making his first start at the Avenue,
smashed home his fourth pre-season goal after Marriott parried Jon
Docker's shot.
Docker, also making his first start in front of the Dorchester
faithful, burst into the box following Jermyn's neat knock down
but the midfield man was foiled by the Exeter stopper, luckily though
Bent was on hand to pounce for the Magpies.
Chances were rare in the second period, Evans though did well to
save from Matt Taylor's header on 65 minutes, and then Matt Bye's
left foot rocket 15 minutes later.
The last real effort of the game came from Grecians substitute
Rui Baguista whose header beat the Magpies' keeper but came back
off the crossbar.
Two new defenders featured for the home side in the second half.
Nathan Simpson, former Torquay defender, replaced Jake Smeaton at
half-time, and Ouzo Opara, recently on trial at Gillingham, came
on for Nathan Peprah-Annan with five minutes left.
Brooks is keen to have another look at the pair. "I only got
to see glimpses of the two, so it's unfair for me to make a judgement
on them based on what I saw in the game.
"Them and the other trialists all deserve more time at this
stage."
