Closing the gap

Dorset Echoby Terry Spracklen

Dorchester closed the points gap on fourth bottom Welling United with a richly-deserved Blue Square South point at Champion Hill.

The Magpies, did slip a place, however, after St Albans City won the day's six-pointer at fellow strugglers Weston-super-Mare.

The county town side had two new faces in their starting line-up.

Former Worcester City central defender Patrece Liburd turning in a solid display at the heart of the defence until substituted on the hour and Nick Eastham, who has joined the Magpies on a month's loan from Blue Square Premier Salisbury City providing some much needed support and penetration to the front-line.

But it was fit again leading scorer Jones Awuah who grabbed the deserved equaliser for Dorchester two minutes after Fisher's pacy Shaun Batt had steered the Londoners into a 49th minute lead.

Jeff Goulding tried his luck with an early low shot on the turn which proved too weak to cause any problem for Francisco Ramos in the visitors' goal.

Dorchester then had appeals for a penalty waved aside although James Rowe seemed convinced that his cross had been handled.

Kieran Murtagh gifted the ball to Mark Jermyn who sent an instant 25-yard effort in to the arms of Fisher keeper Simon Overland.

A fine crossfield ball from Jermyn was chased by Eastham who, although forced wide, was still able to play the ball back across the 18-yard line for Jermyn whose shot deflected wide.

The match then seemed to enter a lengthy subdued spell and it was not until the 20th minute that any noteworthy action occurred when Rowe's free-kick was met by Awuah whose 12-yard header flew over the crossbar.

At the other end a Batt free-kick, following a foul by Danny Clay, was cleared to safety by Jake Smeaton.

A hefty clearance from Wesley Thomas forced Ramos out of his area and he was fouled by Goulding as he attemped to head clear.

Fisher nearly took a 36th minute lead when Tomlin and Goulding exchanged passes and Thomas ran through only to pull his shot wide of the far post.

While in first half stoppage time both Jamie Gleeson and Clay sent shots over for Dorchester.

Fisher took the lead on 49 minutes when Goulding and Tomlin again combined this time to set up the unmarked Batt who beat Ramos with a low shot from six yards.

But just two minutes later, the Magpies were handed the chance to equalise when Rowe was fouled as he attempted to shoot 20 yards from goal.

With Jermyn seemingly shaping to shoot, Rowe played a short free-kick to Gleeson then peeled away to receive the return pass and produce a firm drive which Overland could only parry into the path of Awuah.

The ball appeared to bounce off the Dorchester marksman and was deemed to have crossed the line by the assistant referee despite being desperately hacked clear.

Dorchester went close to gaining the advantage two minutes later when Eastham won a corner which Gleeson delivered from the right for Awuah but he glanced his header wide.

At the other end, a long ball from Mark Wright ran out of play before Tomlin could take advantage while a Wright free-kick struck the Dorchester wall. Ramos then did well to gather at his near post as Goulding got a foot to Batt's centre.

With play swinging from end to end, Eastham set Gleeson away but the Dorchester midfielder snatched at his shot which flew harmlessly wide.

Then Goulding's ball into the Magpies' box was hoisted over the bar by Thomas.

Substitute Ivan Forbes forced a corner which Rowe swung over from the left - Goulding then flicked the ball across his own six-yard box but only to Roy O'Brien who unfortunately slipped at the vital moment and the opportunity was lost.

A foul on Eastham presented the visitors with another free-kick opportunity in an identical position to the earlier one that had led to their equaliser but this time there was no trickery and Rowe's kick, although well struck, was aimed too close to Overland.

In the closing stages Fisher substitute Danny Green curled wide a free-kick awarded for a foul by Jamie Cumming, one of five Magpies to receive a yellow card.

Then Dorchester substitutes Tareq Khalil and Forbes combined to produce the last goal attempt of the afternoon but Overland was again well positioned to stop Khalil's effort.
