Blitz from Beavers ends Shield hopes

Dorset Echoby Terry Spracklen

Dorchester crashed out of the Setanta Shield at the second hurdle last night.

The Magpies were left reeling when Hampton & Richmond scored three times in a devastating seven-minute spell midway through the first half.

Although Jones Awuah pulled a goal back in first half stoppage time, the Magpies were always left chasing the game and vulnerable to the counter attack which the Beavers pulled off to perfection, enabling the lively Shaun McAuley to complete his hat-trick with two late goals.

The first chance of a hectic first half fell to the home side following a foul by Gary Bowles on Dean Wells, but Barrie Matthews floated his free-kick wide.

Three minutes later, Wells and Ian Hodges combined to set up Matthews whose well-struck drive was cut out by Magpies' keeper Darren Behcet.

The Magpies were struggling to get a foothold on the game but an eighth minute corner gave them their first chance. From James Rowe's delivery, a half clearance by Rob Paris left Jake Smeaton a shooting opportunity, but his 20-yard effort cleared the crossbar.

A fine run from Jamie Cumming culminated in an angled drive which deflected just past the far post. But a mistake at the other end by Mark Jermyn gifted McAuley a clear run on goal, fortunately for the Magpies, he pulled his shot across goal and wide of the far upright.

There was no reprieve for Dorchester in the 23rd minute though, when a perfect pass from Francis Quarm set McAuley clean through to open the scoring.

Two minutes later the Magpies were two goals down as Alan Inns met a cross from Matthews to loop a header over Behcet and into the roof of the net.

Then in the 29th minute it was game over as the Beavers added a third from the penalty spot. Bowles conceded a free-kick on the touchline which was delivered by Wells and aimed to the far post, where Smeaton was adjudged to have impeded Paris. Elliott Godfrey checked his run, sending Behcet the wrong way before rolling his low spot kick inside the opposite corner.

Chances for the Magpies were few and far between although a 42nd minute free-kick outside the box offered an opportunity which Jon Docker rolled to Smeaton, but the former Yeovil youngster smashed his shot high over the bar.

But at a perfect time, seconds before the break, Dorchester were thrown a lifeline when a Rowe corner was nodded goalwards by Bowles to Awuah, who appeared to back-head the ball over Matt Lovett in the home goal.

It soon became clear that the goal hungry Beavers were not ready to relinquish their grip on the game and Behcet remained the busiest keeper, pulling off a double block to deny Inns before McAuley blasted a good chance over.

Rowe flashed an angled effort wide of the far post for the visitors, while at the other end, Inns aimed a header straight at Behcet and McAuley sent another two efforts wide. But McAuley could not be stopped and in the 72nd minute he latched on to Hodges' pass to drill a low shot past the advancing Behcet.

Hampton added even more firepower in the form of leading scorer Lawrence Yaku who came off the bench to replace Godfrey, but it was McAuley who completed the home side's scoring and his own hat-trick when he netted a near identical goal seven minutes from time.

Although substitute Ian Forbes bagged a second Dorchester goal from Rowe's cross with four minutes remaining, it proved to be no more than a consolation for the Magpies.
