Magpies punished by Beaver Yaku
by
Ky Capel
Dorchester's winless run continues after a 1-0 defeat at home to
Hampton & Richmond, a game the Magpies could, and should have
won.
When you are down at the bottom things invariably go against you
and Dorchester paid the price for missed opportunities when the
Beavers' leading goalscorer Lawrence Yaku netted 10 minutes into
the second half.
The Magpies had much the better of the first half, seeing several
chances go begging.
Dani Rodrigues, making his third appearance in the black and white
shirt, found himself clean through inside five minutes but was denied
by the assistant's flag.
Good build up play involving Wes Fogden and Charlie Henry, who
made his return after a two-match ban, saw Rodrigues lay the ball
off to strike partner Jones Awuah, but his effort from 20 yards
went just wide.
The first sniff at goal for the visitors came when Mark Jermyn
almost diverted Elliott Godfrey's cross past his own keeper Darren
Behcet, luckily for the Magpies his touch lacked the power to beat
Behcet.
A breakaway by the hosts in the 24th minute saw Henry burst forward
and find Rodrigues, the Portuguese forward then played a great return
to his team-mate but, with his first touch taking him slightly away
from goal, his shot was blocked by Hampton stopper Matt Lovett.
The rebound fell Awuah's way, however, the bounce prevented him
directing his header below the crossbar.
And the Ghanaian had the best chance of the opening period on 34
minutes when his diving header flashed past the near post from Henry's
free-kick on the right side.
The Beavers almost opened the scoring three minutes before the
break with their best opportunity, but, for the second home game
running, Nathan Peprah-Annan cleared off the line from a looping
header, this time Shaun McAuley was the player thwarted. McAuley
being the man who bagged a hat-trick in Tuesday night's Setanta
Shield tie between the two sides.
After dominating the opening period, Dorchester found the going
tougher at the start of the second. Godfrey's 49th minute drive,
after Alex Browne's poor clearance, was thwarted by the fingertips
of Behcet, and six minutes later the away side were ahead. Skipper
Browne, making his 200th appearance for the club, carried the ball
forward from the back until Rob Paris sent him crashing. Referee
Robbins waved away Browne's protests and Alan Inns picked up the
loose ball before hitting a lofted pass over the top.
And with Browne absent from his position Yaku beat Peprah-Annan
and Jermyn for pace and fired a low shot past Behcet on the bounce
to bag his eighth of the campaign.
The Magpies then began to take control once more, and on 68 minutes
Rodrigues played a clever ball to Awuah on the right side of the
area, but rather than cross to Henry he tried a shot which was comfortably
saved by Lovett.
Jamie Gleeson went even closer when he drew an excellent stop from
Lovett minutes later, following good work by substitute Ivan Forbes
down the right.
Rodrigues was the next to try his luck but the 27-year-old's shot
on the turn, after Awuah's dummy, lacked the sufficient power to
trouble the visiting keeper.
In the remaining minutes Hampton frustrated their opponents and
began to slow down the pace of the game, but in injury time the
best chance of the match saw the Magpies agonisingly miss out on
a share of the spoils.
James Rowe, who came on with 10 minutes to go, picked up the ball
on the right hand side and checked back onto his left before delivering
a deep cross into the Hampton box.
Browne rose highest and nodded his header back across goal where
Awuah was unmarked, unfortu- nately Dorchester's joint top scorer
could only find a post with his header when it seemed easier to
score.
