Avenue blues return

Dorset Echoby David Swain

There was a refreshing new look about Dorchester on their home league debut last night - but they still couldn't shake off last season's Avenue Stadium blues.

A solitary second half goal from Hawks skipper Tom Jordan was enough to send Shaun Brooks' fledgling side to defeat against an experienced Hampshire outfit who underlined their promotion potential with a thoroughly professional performance.

But ultimately they had goalkeeper Kevin Scriven to thank for hanging on to their victory against a Dorchester squad containing eight newcomers.

He was the busier of the two keepers in the first half when his good work denied both Charlie Henry and Jon Docker, and he then produced a last minute super save to prevent substitute Jones Awuah salvaging a point for the Magpies.

In a lively opening Portuguese striker Hardy Pinto-Moreira had Scriven sprawling to save inside three minutes while home skipper Alex Browne then popped up in the goalmouth to volley away a looping header from Jamie Collins with Simon Evans beaten.

Ex-Terra Shaun Wilkinson was a shade fortunate to get only a caution after hauling back Charlie Henry as he headed for goal in the 15th minute.

When the Magpies then instituted a well-rehearsed free-kick routine some 25 yards out, Jamie Gleeson and Roy O'Brien worked shooting space for Jon Docker who had Scriven soaring along his line to fingertip his fierce drive over the bar.

As both sides zipped the ball around on the slick surface, there were more close calls at each end.

A misjudgement by Nathan Peprah-Annan allowed Brett Poate to break down the left but his cross was sliced wide by Jamie Slabber.

Then Scriven just won a race with Henry to a through ball and the crunching collision between the two left the little striker nursing a painful kick in the ribs.

But 10 minutes later he was back to his lively best again when he skipped onto a delightful through ball from Pinto-Moreira, turned inside a defender and saw his shot squeeze through Scriven's legs and trickle just wide of the upright.

Havant bombarded the home defence with a string of inswinging corners early in the second half and eventually it paid off.

Under-pressure from a posse of yellow shirted attackers in a crowded goalmouth, Evans could only palm Baptiste's close range header into the air and when it came down Jordan had the simplest of openings from a couple of feet.

The setback knocked the stuffing out of Dorchester and, with their midfield ineffective, they endured a lengthy spell when it was all they could do to keep the Hawks at bay.

But to their credit, their defence battled through the bad patch without conceding again and when they did summon up the resolve to launch a late rescue bid it was Scriven who stood in their way again.

Mark Jermyn's long cross was headed across goal by Browne and Awuah's crashing shot from 10 yards struck the Havant keeper on the knee and rebounded to safety.
