Despite the uncertainty Magpies earn vital point

Dorset Echoby Terry Spracklen

Dorchester Town owner Eddie Mitchell watched his son, Tom, make hs first Blue Square South start from a sparsely populated Church Road directors' box but declined to comment on terrace rumours that there had been an exodus of Magpies' directors following a meeting of the Dorchester Town Board last Thursday.

The players did not seem to be affected by any uncertainty behind the scenes and turned in a battling performance twice coming from behind to earn a useful away point.

The home side, formed of a merger between Hayes and their near neighbours Yeading, carved out the first chance of the game in the third minute.

This came after a mistake by Jake Smeaton enabled Ram Marwa the chance to seize possession and set up Danny Allen-Page whose cross found the unmarked Josh Scott who incredibly fired wide from six yards with just Simon Evans to beat.

Then when a promising Dorchester attack broke down, a lightning break by Scott nearly unlocked the Magpies' defence but as he received the return pass following a one-two with Stafforde Palmer, the visitors were saved by the offside flag.

United supporters were able to celebrate in the 11th minute though when Toby Little's left wing cross was met on the right edge of the penalty area by Allen-Page who beat Evans with a dipping shot into the far corner.

Dorchester wasted no time in fighting back. Mitchell's 18-yard drive was diverted away from goal by Nevin Saroya at the expense of a corner which was driven to the far edge of the penalty area by Jamie Gleeson for Bradley Middleton who found the unmarked Jones Awuah with a low ball into the six-yard line and Dorchester's leading scorer drove home the equaliser.

Evans spared Mitchell's blushes in the 18th minute when the former Portsmouth youngster was dispossessed by Scott who burst forward unchecked only to be denied by a fine save from Evans who dived to his right to push aside Scott's well stuck shot.

A flying header from Roy O'Brien looked too close to his own near post for comfort but served nevertheless to successfully deal with a dangerous centre from the lively left winger, Toby Little.

As Hayes & Yeading continued to press, a glanced header from Steve Perkins required a headed goalline clearance from Jake Smeaton at the far post.

A foul on Gleeson conceded a free- kick 20 yards from goal which the Dorchester midfielder curled straight into the arms of former Lazio keeper Alessio De Angelis, whose international clearance had come through just in time for him to make his debut.

At the other end another Little cross found Marwa whose firm header was saved by Evans who then dropped the ball but his defence hastily cleared the danger.

United regained the lead in the 33rd minute when Scott beat the offside trap to race on to a through ball from Palmer and fire past the advancing Evans.

The Magpies came close to equalising for the second time two minutes from the break but Jon Dockers' delightfully curled free-kick just eluded the far post lunge of Middleton.

Dorchester took just ten minutes of the second half to haul themselves level when Tareq Khalil's pass picked out Awuah who in turn played in Gleeson who scored with a low diagonal shot across De Angelis into the far corner.

Little sent a shot just wide after Dorchester failed to clear their lines whilst Scott charged through and produced a near post drive which was pushed aside by Evans.

Dorchester went close to taking the lead themselves in the 75th minute when Khalil's pass found substitute Darren Watts who took two strides before unleashing a fierce shot which De Angelis did well to turn into his side-netting.

From the resultant Gleeson corner, O'Brien glanced a header wide.

The Magpies were clearly sensing that the three points could be theirs and Khalil picked out Awuah whose shot was pushed away by De Angelis although the effort would not have counted as the flag was raised for offside.

Awuah charged on to another through ball, this time a looping header from Mark Jermyn, but the Dorchester striker was adjudged to have unfairly muscled Saroya out of his path.

Dorchester's assistant manager, Paul Compton then withdrew Docker nine minutes from time and threw on Alex Browne as an extra striker.

In the last five minutes of a well contested fixture both sides had chances to clinch victory.

First United substitute Errol Telemaque just failed to connect with an inviting Little left wing cross then from Awuah's lay off, Khalil was shaping to shoot when Will Hendry produced a fine saving tackle.

The last chance of the match fell to former Yeading centre half Saroya whose looping header flew over the Dorchester crossbar.
