On-form Groves smashes hat-trick
by
Terry Spracklen
Matt Groves notched a hat-trick as Dorchester comfortably
overcame the challenge of Wessex League newcomers New Milton Town
at Fawcetts Field last night.
Groves had an early sniff at goal but New Milton keeper Mark Watson
was alert to the danger, while at the other end Simon Evans had
an early scare when his fourth minute clearance was charged down
by Chris Berry who found Toby Williams but he fired wide.
Following a lay-off from Aidan Sainsbury, fellow trialist Jorge
Jermy had a 20 yard effort saved by Watson. Then after a foul on
James Rowe, Sainsbury went close again when his free kick was clawed
around the post by Watson.
From the resultant corner by Rowe, Alex Browne glanced a header
over the bar. Darren Watts then tried his luck from 35 yards and
his shot would have dipped under the bar but for the agility of
Watson.
But the inevitable Magpies opener came in the 29th minute when
Groves tapped home the loose ball after Watson had parried a shot
from Sean Smith. Watson though was not to be beaten again and saved
a long range shot from Sainsbury, an angled effort from Groves and
a 20 yard drive from Jermy.
Watson was replaced by Gary Lord for the second half and he was
kept equally busy. Substitute Elliott Bent was denied at his near
post by Lord while former Yeovil apprentice Jake Smeaton fired over
and Jermy hit his shot over.
The second goal came in the 52nd minute after a good move through
the centre started by Sainsbury who picked out Bent but his shot
was parried by Lord and Groves snapped up the loose ball chance
from six yards.
Fourteen minutes later, Groves completed his hat-trick with a low
12 yard strike which beat Lord with the aid of a deflection.
Dorchester looked menacing with every attack and bagged a deserved
fourth goal in stoppage time when Mark Robinson, brought on as a
substitute left back, played the ball inside for Tom Mitchell who
in turn set up Henry to deliver a cross to Bent who finished from
close range.
Central defender Scott Sampson, released last weekend by AFC Bournemouth,
completed the trio of new trialists on show and was one of three
players who completed the 90 minutes for the county town side along
with Browne and Evans.
