Magpies crash out

Dorset Echoby Echo Reporter

Dorchester Town were dumped out of the FA Cup by Paulton Rovers last night, a side two divisions below them.

Goals from Ricky Hulbert and Rob Claridge in each half were enough to win the Second Qualifying Round replay for the hosts, just two days after they were denied victory by Elliot Bent's late strike.

Director of football Shaun Brooks made five changes from Saturday's starting line-up with Guy Lopez making his first appearance since rejoining, while Jake Smeaton, Hardy Pinto-Moreira, Charlie Henry and Alex Browne all made the first XI.

The first chance of the game fell to the home side on five minutes when Ben Cleverley put Hulbert through. Simon Evans made the save, but the rebound fell invitingly to Lee Bryant who could only fire wide.

Seven minutes later Pinto-Moreira was nearly put through by Jon Docker, but Rovers' keeper, Dave Dyson, rushed from his line to clear. Moments later the Portuguese striker fired a shot just wide after a good run.

Rovers went ahead on 14 minutes as Chris Lane was fouled just outside the box. Ben Cleverley's low, driven free-kick was tucked home by Hulbert to open the scoring.

And the British Gas Business Division One South & West side almost doubled the lead two minutes later as Dan Cleverley's right-foot shot across goal, from just inside the area, went agonisingly close to beating the far post.

Brian Dutton and Pinto-Moreira then failed to hit the target, while at the other end Claridge forced a good save from Evans.

Magpies' frustration led to a rash challenge in the 40th minute by Dutton on Ben Cleverley right in front of the Rover's dug out, where substitute Dean Pendry got off his seat to push the Dorchester man.

Referee Robbins, who officiated Saturday's clash, had no alternative but to book both players. The last action of the half saw Claridge's 30-yard volley go just wide.

Immediately from the restart Lane and Hulbert combined on the left for Paulton, but the cross was just too deep for Claridge at the far post.

Just like Saturday the action switched from end to end as first Docker went close for the county town side with a free-kick, and then Claridge forced another good save from Evans.

Dorchester began to enjoy their best period of the game with the lively Henry threatening on several occasions, but for all their pressure there was no real threat on Dyson's goal.

Rovers then struck the knockout blow by extending their advantage on 62 minutes when a defence-splitting pass from Ross Casey sent Claridge through, and in a repeat of his goal on Saturday he fired home past the Magpies' stopper.

This seemed to extinguish whatever fire there was left in the Dorchester side and, although substitute Jones Awuah forced a good save from Dyson on 79 minutes, it was one of the quietest games the Rovers' keeper has experienced with the club.

Hulbert almost made the margin of victory even greater when put through by Claridge with eight minutes remaining, but Evans came to the Magpies' rescue once again.

Paulton now await the victors of tonight's replay between AFC Totton and Merthyr Tydfil.
