Elliot spares blushes

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Elliot Bent grabbed a late goal to rescue a replay for Dorchester Town in their FA Cup tie with Paulton Rovers.

The Avenue Stadium crowd breathed a huge sigh of relief as Bent curled a left-foot beauty into the Rovers' net with five minutes to play after a disappointing performance from the Magpies in this Second Qualifying Round clash.

Rob Claridge opened the scoring for the British Gas Business League Division One South & West outfit in the 55th minute, and it looked like that would be enough, but both sides will contest a replay at Paulton's Athletic Field ground tonight after Bent's first competitive goal in a Magpies' shirt.

In a lacklustre first half the Magpies took their time to find any sort of rhythm with the lower league visitors more than holding their own.

Rovers chased and harried the hosts into several misplaced passes.

Jon Docker though, almost tested the Robins' keeper, Dave Dyson, on eight minutes but a saving challenge by Lee Bryant denied Docker the chance to shoot.

The visitors did cause a scare when Ben Cleverley's cross from the left deceived Simon Evans in goal before hitting the crossbar, luckily for Dorchester, no-one in maroon was there to pick up the pieces.

Evans starting the game so as not to cup-tie on-loan Yeovil stopper Darren Behcet.

Mark Jermyn went off injured just shy of 20 minutes and was replaced by club captain Alex Browne with stand-in skipper Roy O'Brien moving across the back four into the left-back position.

Nathan Peprah-Annan had to be alert to clear the danger as Dan Cleverley tried to get a shot away at the back post.

The Magpies then came to life somewhat in the 37th minute as two chances in two minutes almost made an impression on the scoreboard.

First, Bent led a breakaway from a cleared Paulton corner. The 19-year-old then played the ball back to Docker who spotted the run of Brian Dutton. The midfielder then found himself clear but his shot was saved well by Dyson.

Bent then had an opportunity after Jones Awuah's pass, but the ex-Fulham trainee's fierce strike was denied by the Rovers' stopper.

After the break Docker saw a low drive go just past the post, but the Robins stepped up a gear and Chris Lane's edge of the area effort had to be palmed away by Evans.

Browne then flashed a header wide before the lower league side took the lead. Browne found himself out of position trying to win possession, Bryant then picked up the ball and found Claridge all on his own, and the striker raced through unchallenged before slotting the ball past the advancing Magpies keeper.

It was now a rescue operation for director of football Shaun Brooks. Having brought Charlie Henry on at half-time for Mark Robinson, the Magpies' boss introduced Ivan Forbes for centre-half Gary Bowles immediately after the goal.

Dorchester were desperate for an equaliser but found openings hard to come by, and amidst their pressure Claridge found himself clean through yet again only to be denied by Evans in the 74th minute.

Awuah had a shot blocked after good build up play but the Avenue faithful were saved of any heart failures as Docker burst forward drawing Paulton defenders out of position. Bent moved into the space on the edge of the area and received the ball from Docker before stroking a left-foot curler past Dyson.

A relieved Magpies perhaps could have gone on to win. Henry forced a good save out of Dyson before the Dorchester substitute saw his appeal for a penalty waved away after he went down under the keeper's challenge.

In the final minute of normal time a classic cup goal could have been scored by Docker, but after beating three players the former Ports-mouth man's shot lacked the power to trouble Dyson in goal.

The last action of a frantic end to the game saw Henry's shot whistle past the post.
