Dolphins hold Magpies

Dorset Echoby Terry Spracklen

Tommy Killick's Poole Town provided a stern test for Shaun Brook's Blue Square South side at Tatnam last night.

Andy Culliford sent an early lob over trialist Dorchester keeper Ashlee Jones and his crossbar then former Dorch-ester winger Danny Cann narrowly missed the target with a fierce drive as Poole posed the greater early threat.

A cross from Ryan Hill was met by Elliott Bent at the far post but the former Fulham striker glanced his header wide.

The best move of the first half for the Magpies came in the 20th minute when a superb through ball from Mark Jermyn found Bent but as keeper Max Frampton advanced, Bent sent a dipping shot against the crossbar.

Frampton then saved a Hill free-kick in the 40th minute just before the Wessex League side opened the scoring when Trefor Smith's cross was headed past a statuesque Jones by Culliford from close range.

Dorchester boss Shaun Brooks made six changes at the start of the second-half and it was substitute Darren Watts who was gifted the first chance following a poor Poole clearance but he fired over from 20 yards.

The Dorchester equaliser came in the 61st minute when Charlie Henry played a fine pass out to the left wing in to the path of Bent whose drive was deflected into the net off defender James Guetling who had been on the pitch barely a minute as a Poole substitute.

The Dolphins should have regained the lead two minutes later but Steve Smith fluffed his first attempted shot from six-yards and at the second attempt failed to get any power behind his effort affording substitute Magpies' gloveman, Simon Evans, a comfortable save.

Evans then saved a long-range effort from Karim Benssaouda, Poole's leading scorer last season.

The Magpies looked increasingly dangerous whenever Henry gained the ball and in the 78th minute he jinked his way past several Poole defenders before driving a 20-yard shot over the bar.

Tom Mitchell's cross was met by Mark Robinson whose header also cleared the crossbar.

A free-kick awarded for a foul on Groves was curled low around the wall by Henry but saved on his line by Frampton.

The last chance fell to Bent following another pinpoint pass from Henry but again Frampton was equal to the final shot.

Brooks said: "It was a good work-out. We knew we would come up against a better side tonight and at times we played some good football especially in the second half when we had a slightly stronger team out.

"Elliot has now scored two in two games and is doing well, and all the other trialists did well up to a point. We will make decisions on them over the next couple of days.

"We are still looking for one or two in different areas particularly on the left side where we need a left-back and a left centre-back to give us some balance."

The Magpies entertain Sydenhams Wessex Premier League AFC Totton tomorrow at the Avenue Stadium (3pm).

Brooks added: "It will be a pretty similar squad although I think we will go with a slightly more settled team."
