Trialists on the mark as Magpies impress

Dorset Echoby Terry Spracklen

Magpies' fans will be looking forward to the start of the new season after an exciting opening display by Shaun Brooks' men at Long Lane last night.

Brooks fielded almost two different line-ups in each half against the Sydenham's Wessex Premier League side who struggled to make any impact on a game dominated by Dorchester.

Former Millfield School student Lewis Irish produced the first telling shot which forced Ringwood's veteran keeper of 17 campaigns, Russell Goodman, into a diving save.

Shortly after, a low shot from former AFC Bournemouth man Aidan Sainsbury was deflected wide for a corner which was delivered by Ryan Hill, back from his loan spell at Taunton, to the far post where skipper Alex Browne opened the scoring with a bullet header.

Another Sainsbury effort flew just wide of the far post before the home side produced their only testing effort of the match when a low shot from Sam Yeats was saved by the diving Simon Evans.

At the other end Mark Jermyn's 25-yard effort was saved by Good-man while Browne dived to meet another Hill corner but headed wide.

advertisementIt took just three minutes of the second half for Dorchester to double their tally when former Gillingham striker Jones Awuah scored with a deflected shot from the edge of the area.

Three minutes later, fellow trialist Elliot Bent, younger brother of Charlton's Marcus, drove home a third goal after a fine lay-off from Mark Robinson. Between the two goals livewire Charlie Henry, certain to be a crowd pleaser at the Avenue Stadium, sent an angled effort just over.

Tom Mitchell then scooped a shot over the bar after a great touch from Henry, and from Robinson's centre, Mitchell turned provider for Bent who fired just wide.

Henry then showed great trickery in the six-yard box only to fire over, but the former Cambridge City winger went close with a 25-yard free kick, which smacked the Ringwood crossbar.

Awuah then went close to nudging home a fourth Magpie goal as he met a Henry cross but the ball rolled wide.
