Magpies send holders packing
by
Ky Capel
Dorchester Town sent the FA Trophy holders crashing out of the competition
thanks to a last-gasp penalty from substitute Jon Docker.
The midfielder, on his return from injury, kept a cool head to
slot past Borough keeper Alan Julian and book the Magpies' place
in the draw for the second round.
A header from Jones Awuah had given the Blue Square South hosts
a 1-0 lead but Mark Arber levelled matters before Docker's late
strike.
Wes Fogden set the tone for a hard-fought performance with a diving
block on the edge of his own area to deny Zoltan Liptak's shot on
goal.
The visitors though, should have put themselves ahead through Steve
Morison in the 12th minute but after peeling away from his marker
the striker's tame effort failed to beat Darren Behcet in the home
side's goal.
The same Stevenage man found himself alone once again three minutes
later only to see his header drift wide following a quickly taken
free-kick.
The Blue Square Premier side began to take the game by the scruff
of the neck and after a weak clearance from Roy O'Brien Barry Fuller
fired wide.
Hesitancy Anthony Stokes then wasted another good opportunity,
blazing over following a decent knock down by Morison.
And it was Morison who had the next chance. The visiting forward
pounced on Mark Jermyn's hesitancy to fire a shot across goal, however,
Behcet denied him with a brilliant fingertip save to force the ball
around the far post.
Assistant-manager Paul Compton, filling in for the ill director
of football Shaun Brooks, sent 18-year-old Darren Watts onto the
pitch at half-time in place of Elliot Bent, and the change almost
paid immediate dividends.
Watts played the ball in behind the Stevenage defence for Awuah
to run on to, a saving challenge from Luke Oliver foiled the Magpies'
top scorer just as he was about to pull the trigger.
The Ghanaian though, wasn't to be denied on 56 minutes. A free-kick
on the left from James Rowe found the 23-year-old's head and his
effort bounced in off the near post to the delight of the home support.
Dorchester's lead didn't last long however, Peter Taylor's men
soon found an equaliser on the hour mark. Arber poked home after
Behcet, under pressure, failed to hold Craig Dobson's corner.
The Magpies didn't feel sorry for themselves and went about restoring
their advantage.
Rowe, who worked tirelessly in the middle, sprayed the ball out
to Ivan Forbes on the left. The Portuguese winger then found Awuah
in the box who held the ball up before laying off to Fogden to shoot.
The Brighton loanee's shot though, was athletically saved by Julian
much to the despair of the 19-year-old.
The final 20 minutes proved cagey with neither side wanting to
make a mistake and surrender the chance of a replay.
Before the home side found their winner they had Jermyn to thank
for a last ditch tackle that prevented Morison from surely winning
the tie.
But as it was, John White was adjudged to have pulled back Fogden
in the area and Docker made no mistake to send the Avenue Stadium
faithful wild and Dorchester into the hat for today's draw.
