Evans keeps his nerve

Dorset Echoby Echo Reporter

Magpies' director of football Shaun Brooks praised keeper Simon Evans after regular stopper Darren Behcet was taken ill on the morning of Saturday's match.

Behcet was suffering from a sickness bug, which gave the opportunity to 19-year-old Evans against unbeaten Bishop's Stortford.

Evans had a shaky start, but grew in confidence as Dorchester maintained their excellent away record this season with a point which perhaps owed much to the woeful finishing of the home side.

Brooks told Echosport: "I think Simon deserves a pat on the back. He only found out he was playing this morning. He showed a lot of character.

"He was getting a lot of stick from the home fans, but he grew in confidence. He's a young keeper, but he did okay."

Brooks might not have thought that after seven minutes of this match. Evans' awful goal-kick went straight to a home player. The ball was played across goal, but Blues' striker Jack Midson slipped at the most inopportune moment and stabbed his effort wide of the right post.

Darren Watts' 20-yard strike was well stopped by Stortford keeper Andy Young as the visitors tried to force their way into this match.

However, it was the hosts who went closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half.

A long goal kick saw Greg Pearson out-pace the advancing Evans. The striker's first touch pushed him wide right, but from an incredibly tight angle he still managed to strike the foot of the near post.

Close to the half-hour Mark Young did well to stop Charlie Henry's fierce low effort from the right side of the box.

On the stroke of half-time Loui Fazakerley was denied from close range by the brave Dorchester keeper.

The second half was fairly even with Young denying Hardy Pinto-Moreira early on, while Evans made good stops from Craig Edwards, Tom Williamson and Pearson.

The visitors got better as the game wore on and a speculative 20-yard shot from Henry fizzed just inches over the bar.

The dangerous Henry was thwarted by a wonderful tackle from Stortford right-back Matt Jones moments later.

At the other end, a good move ended with Blues left-back Mark Wright blasting over the bar when composure was required on 68 minutes.

Minutes later Wright's exquisite cross was met by Pearson, but he headed wide from seven yards with just Evans to beat.

The home defence fell asleep 10 minutes from time, but Henry lashed wide with just the keeper to beat.

On 85 minutes Pearson wasted another chance for the hosts, while in injury-time Stortford substitute Roy Essandoh drifted an eight-yard effort agonisingly wide of the right post with Evans beaten.

Prior to this Elliot Bent's fierce drive was well blocked by Young as both sides had to settle for a point.

Brooks added: "They shaded it in the first half, but we came out strong in the second half. We looked the more likely side to win the game.

"We have definitely had better results away. In the three home games we have not performed badly but we have come across Havant, Lewes and Eastleigh."
