Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester had to settle for a draw in a drab bottom of the table clash, which on reflection could easily have been no points for the county town side.

The Magpies have moved up a place to 20th by virtue of goal difference, four points adrift of safety, and both sides will be relieved following defeats for Bognor Regis Town, St Albans City and Welling United.

It took a while for the home side to get out of first gear and they almost paid for their slow start as the visitors spurned two glorious chances inside the opening ten minutes.

Jake Smeaton committed a foul near the left touchline and Nicky Greene took the kick. The ball was swung in low towards the near post where Steffan Ball arrived unmarked but the striker couldn't divert his effort on target.

Then Harry Ottaway found Greene in acres of space through the middle, however, Francisco Ramos, on his home debut, managed to save with his legs.

Ball sent a header over the crossbar on 13 minutes, ten before the hosts recorded their first attempts at goal.

A Jamie Gleeson corner found its way to Roy O'Brien at the back post and he lifted the ball back into the six-yard box. United keeper Kevin Davies could only palm the ball away to Alex Browne who, playing as a striker for the second consecutive game, saw his header come back off the bar.

As expected in a relegation six-pointer', proceedings turned cagey as both sides seemed reluctant to throw men forward.

The only meaningful attack in the remainder of the first half saw Tom Hughes volley wide from Greene's corner on the right.

Ivan Forbes showed glimpses of positive play but there were no signs of an end product from anyone in a Magpies' shirt.

Dorchester were once again slow out of the blocks and would have found themselves a goal down had it not been for a poor finish.

Smeaton's challenge to deny Dundas a clean strike fell at the feet of Ball but with an open goal he sliced his shot well wide. In fairness though, the angle was always tightening.

Jon Docker's introduction just before the hour added a small spark in somewhat a lifeless game. The midfielder created two opportunities not long after coming on. First he skipped past two defenders and set up Forbes whose shot went just wide of the far post before passing to Tom Clarke who shot straight at Davies from 18 yards.

Docker then tried his luck from a free-kick 20 yards out, but Davies was never in danger of being beaten and caught comfortably.

In the 75th minute Clarke blazed over after a good knock down from Browne and that was the final attempt of any note.

Sutton made a late surge and forced two corners in added time that came to nothing and referee Phipps, whose whistle saw the most action of the afternoon, brought to an end a game that looked more suited to a mid-table comfort clash as opposed to a relegation dogfight.
