Docker strikes
by
Terry Spracklen
A much-improved second-half display earned Dorchester a point at
Welling in Blue Square South.
The Magpies trailed to a goal on the stroke of half-time but John
Docker's 20-yard drive early in the second period earned them a
share of the spoils.
Director of football Shaun Brooks made two changes from the side
that lost at home to Lewes with Jamie Cumming coming in at right-back
and Jones Awuah leading a three-man frontline.
Welling matched the Magpies' three-man midfield but struggled to
cope with the pace and trickery of Charlie Henry, who provided Dorchester's
best openings in the first half.
Henry's 15th-minute shot was deflected wide for a corner then Leon
Solomon was forced to head behind the former Cambridge City winger's
teasing right-wing cross.
Helped by Cumming's smart run, Henry found room for himself in
the 22nd minute but his low shot from the edge of the penalty area
was comfortably saved by Welling keeper Jamie Turner.
The hosts gave Brooks' men plenty to think about at the other
end with striker Omari Coleman terrorising skipper Alex Browne.
Welling's Adam Cottrell dragged his effort wide, Sam Keevil's free-kick
went straight at the defensive wall and only a last-ditch tackle
by Browne denied Coleman a clear sight of goal on the half-hour.
Turner did well to deny Henry and Cumming in quick succession
before the Wings turned the screw just before the break.
Keevil won a midfield tussle before releasing Cottrell who failed
to score with just keeper Darren Behcet to beat and then home striker
Nicky Ward shot agonisingly over from the edge of the penalty area.
Magpies lost Cumming to injury just before half-time and Welling
deservedly took the lead in time added on when Richard Carpenter's
pin-point free-kick was headed in by Coleman.
Brooks' half-time team talk certainly had the desired effect as
the county town side were level within four minutes of the restart.
Elliott Bent and Henry swapped flanks and a foul on the latter
presented the visitors with a free-kick 20 yards from goal. The
ball was worked quickly to Docker, whose 20-yard shot proved too
good for Turner.
Docker nearly repeated the trick five minutes later but his 30-yard
free-kick came back off the upright with Turner beaten.
Dorchester's full-time fitness was starting to tell and Welling
struggled to contain them as Docker and Henry continued to go close.
However, it was the hosts who finished strongly and the Avenue
outfit were hanging on to their point by the final whistle.
The Magpies were indebted to loanee keeper Behcet for a stunning
one-handed save from Coleman's left-foot shot with 15 minutes left
before Welling substitute Daniel Maxwell went clean through but
shot straight at the Dorchester stopper.
The home side had strong appeals for a penalty turned down when
Bent appeared to handle inside the area, and then Orlando Smith
came close to winning the game in stoppage time.
The visiting Magpies managed to hold on and will hope to build
on their point at home to Eastleigh today.
