Winless streak goes on

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester Town picked up only their second point from a possible 24 in Blue Square South and will look back with mixed feelings at a game they could have won, but also so easily have lost at the Avenue Stadium.

Dani Rodrigues made his home debut and although not seeing any real chances fall his way, his ability to maintain the ball at every opportunity will be a key asset as he gets closer to 100 per cent match fitness.

In an even first half possession wise the best chances fell Dorchester's way, and had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping the home side would have found themselves two ahead by the interval.

The Magpies lined up in an attacking 3-4-3 formation and it looked to be working early on when, in the seventh minute, Jones Awuah won a free-kick on the right.

James Rowe took the set-piece and delivered a knee-high ball, where, on the edge of the box, Gary Bowles connected with a volley that Jamie Turner in goal did well to palm away.

Welling failed to muster a genuine attempt on target in the first period but Andrew Pugh went a whisker away from connecting with a flick-on in the 12th minute.

Turner made another brilliant save three minutes later to keep the scoreline blank, this time the Wings' stopper clawed the ball out for a corner after Awuah's header looked destined to open the scoring.

A better connection from Rowe 60 seconds later, after Forbes' cut back, would have certainly saw the Magpies take the lead.

Pugh then saw a long-range effort go just over before the same player was denied by a saving block from makeshift centre-half, and stand-in skipper, Mark Jermyn. Alex Browne's ankle injury kept him out of the squad for the first time this campaign.

Forbes went close just before the break. The Portuguese forward made the chance himself when he chased the ball down and robbed Chris Moore of possession, Forbes then burst into the box but his effort was deflected wide.

From the resulting corner Bowles and Tony Sinclair collided in an attempt to win the ball. The Magpies' defender got back to his feet after a couple of minutes but Sinclair looked in a worse state and was later stretchered off with a dislocated kneecap, and replaced by Jackson Ohakham.

Darren Behcet was forced into action for the first time just two minutes after the restart. Omari Coleman's effort on goal took a deflection off Jermyn, but Behcet reacted well to change direction and make the save.

A needless corner given away by Nathan Peprah-Annan was almost punished but Welling's player-manager Neil Smith couldn't direct his shot on target.

The hosts failed to create any openings in the second period and it was left to the visitors to make any impression on the shots tally.

And in the 70th minute an overhead effort from Coleman, following Marlon Patterson's corner, was blocked by a gathering of bodies in the six-yard box.

Little happened in the meantime as two sides in the lower half of the table looked reluctant to throw away the chance of gaining a point, but in the final minute of normal time Coleman wasted a glorious opportunity to snatch all three for the away side.

Substitute Charles Ademeno pounced on some hesitant Dorchester defending to knock the ball back to his strike partner, but Coleman's volley crashed into the side netting, much to the relief of the home support.

Hearts were in mouths once again in the fourth minute of injury time when Peprah-Annan cleared the ball from under his own crossbar as Moore's header homed in on goal.

Dorchester's main problem in a youthful side, with an average age of 21 on show against Welling, is their belief fails to match their talent.

As the players walk out from the dressing room a sign above their heads reads "They can because they think they can" - it's about time the Magpies started to take this message on board and believe in themselves.
