Despair for Magpies

Dorset Echoby Echo Reporter

The Magpies remain rooted in the Blue Square South relegation mire after this single goal defeat at the Woodspring Stadium.

In a crucial six-pointer clash, that lacked good football, both defences dominated with few chances on goal and Weston a shade lucky to take all three points and complete the double over their Dorset opponents who are now nine points adrift of safety.

Director of football Shaun Brooks made two changes from the side that beat Basingstoke on Saturday.

Jamie Gleeson was missing through illness and was replaced by Mark Jermyn while Tareq Khalil was promoted from the substitutes' bench to the starting XI in place of Jon Docker.

For the first 20 minutes the Magpies dominated, forcing six corners with Jermyn and top scorer Jones Awuah making several strong runs.

Saturday's hero Nick Eastham forced a point-blank save from home keeper Ryan Northmore on 12 minutes following Jamie Cumming's cross, which was the away side's first effort on target. And on 18 minutes Eastman was again denied - his superb long-range effort forcing a flying save from Northmore at the expense of a corner.

As Weston gained momentum, Magpies' keeper Francisco Ramos made a smart stop on 23 minutes to deny Marc McGregor's free-kick and the Portuguese gloveman did well on the half-hour mark to punch ex-Terra Wilfried Domoraud's teasing cross to safety as several Weston players closed in.

The game's only goal came on 36 minutes when Lewis Powell was put through to beat Ramos with a low drive.

Ramos though, kept the deficit at one by tipping Barry McConnell's corner kick over the bar in a crowded six-yard box.

For the second half the visitors, in desperate need of a goal, brought on Ivan Forbes for James Rowe and in the opening minutes both Awuah and Eastman saw efforts go just over.

Later on, Docker took over from Khalil while Alex Browne, sporting a heavily bandaged head, replaced Cumming, and Docker looked lively up front, going close with a couple of late efforts.

Domoraud should have added to Weston's advantage on 83 minutes when he got the better of Patrece Liburd and rounded Ramos, who did well to force the striker wide, and the shot went just the wrong side of a post.

Near the end, Powell and substitute Dean Grubb had close-range efforts beaten away by Ramos.
