Seagulls swoop to beat Magpies
by
Ky Capel
Dorchester Town's Avenue Stadium blues made a swift return as they
lost in disappointing fashion to visiting Weston-super-Mare yesterday.
The Magpies were ahead inside five minutes with a Jon Docker penalty,
but a severe lack of drive in the second half allowed the Seagulls'
to take control and score twice through Ryan Harley thus condemning
the hosts to their fourth home defeat of the campaign.
The game got off to the perfect start for the Magpies. Early possession
in the fourth minute saw the ball worked between Roy O'Brien and
Nathan Peprah-Annan down on the right touchline. The latter then
played the ball back to Mark Robinson who swung the ball in and
Ivan Forbes took it on his chest but, as he looked to advance, the
ball struck the arm of centre-half William Clark and referee Collins
pointed to the spot.
Dorchester's second penalty in five days, the first missed by Charlie
Henry at Basingstoke, was dispatched with confidence by Docker to
send Ryan Northmore the wrong way and give Shaun Brooks' side an
early lead.
Jones Awuah then almost doubled the advantage but after Docker's
drive and blocked shot, the striker couldn't convert from 10 yards
under pressure.
The hosts were the only side who looked interested and Docker's
deflected free-kick was scrambled away by keeper Northmore.
The first warning sign from Weston came on 17 minutes courtesy
of Gareth Hopkins. Winger Dean Grubb skipped past O'Brien with a
cheeky nutmeg before cutting the ball back to Hopkins, whose shot
wasn't powerful enough to beat Behcet in goal.
Weston's number eight, Ryan Harley, who was later booked, saw an
edge of the box effort go agonisingly wide after his shot went through
a crowd of players.
A quiet first half cranked up a notch in the 42nd minute when Awuah
almost netted. The Ghanaian jumped with Northmore after a high ball
into the box by Peprah-Annan. The Seagulls' stopper then dropped
the ball under pressure but Awuah couldn't adjust accordingly and
his effort bobbled past the post.
When the half-time whistle blew Dorchester's lead looked safe and
secure, but Brooks' men were about to let that slip through their
fingers.
Weston's best chance of the game so far came five minutes after
the restart. Tricky Grubb found himself all alone after Aaron Wilson's
through pass. The winger then advanced towards Behcet who made a
great save down to his right to deny Grubb.
Ten minutes later Seagulls' possession paid off as Harley received
the ball 25 yards out and duly struck a powerful effort. Brian Dutton,
making his home debut, and Jamie Gleeson went to close the ball
down but the shot hit Gleeson on its way towards goal and that extra
touch proved decisive as the ball evaded Behcet in goal to level
the scores.
The Magpies did make an effort to get back on top but it didn't
last long. Peprah-Annan combined well with substitute Henry and
the former Tottenham man hit a first time volley just past the far
post.
This was all that the home side managed to muster in the second
period and their appearance to settle for the point looked dangerous.
Substitute Seagull Marc McGregor went close with a dipping effort
and striker Hopkins had a header saved by the Magpies' keeper.
Then with four minutes to play skipper Alex Browne conceded a free-kick
on the edge of the Dorchester box. The captain was not amused by
the decision and neither was his side as Harley stepped up and kept
a calm head to lift the ball up and over the wall leaving Behcet
stranded.
The only reply the hosts had was a Docker shot that went high and
wide to leave the visitors with their first away win of the season.
