Rodrigues to the rescue

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Striker Dani Rodrigues chose the perfect time to score his first goal for the Magpies - his stoppage time effort earning an FA Trophy replay for the Blue Square South side.

With time running out, Rodrigues latched on to a long diagonal through ball from central defender Gary Bowles before coolly lobbing Worthing keeper Rikki Banks and racing past him to fire home a dramatic equaliser.

There was even time left for one more attempt which substitute Elliot Bent fired wide but a Dorchester winner would have been tough indeed on attack-minded Worthing of the Ryman League Division One South.

The visitors created more openings than their hosts and took the lead in the 61st minute when Mark Jermyn's miscue gifted the ball to Danny Davis who strode forward before beating Darren Behcet with a low shot in off the far post.

It was Worthing who carved out the first chance when a shot on the turn from Davis was saved by the diving Behcet.

Dorchester's first opportunity was set up by Ivan Forbes who crossed to the near post for Jones Awuah whose effort deflected for a corner.

This was taken by Forbes and met again by Awuah whose looping header was plucked out of the air by Banks. Dorchester then had penalty appeals waved aside when Jamie Gleeson's cross appeared to strike the hand of Stuart Axton.

Worthing should have taken the lead in the 25th minute from skipper Ben Andrew's left-wing cross but Matt Phelan could only steer the ball wide of the far post.

Pulling then delivered another cross from the left this time for Andrews whose header was clawed aside by Behcet.

The same combination required another stunning save from Behcet, at the expense of a corner which was delivered by Pulling for Andrews who then headed over.

Good work by Forbes on the right wing for Dorchester set up Wes Fogden who cut inside the penalty area but aimed his shot too close to Banks. Forbes then beat three defenders before he too fired straight at the Worthing keeper.

The Sussex side made a strong start to the second half. Davis played in Phelan who tore into the penalty area but his shot was comfortably saved by Behcet who then saved a looping header from Andy Alexander.

A right-wing centre from Phelan was nodded away for a corner by Jamie Cumming which was taken by Pulling and met by Ollie Rowland whose glancing header was cleared away for a corner on the opposite flank.

Pulling scurried across to take it and this time as Dorchester failed to clear the danger, Andrews and Davis both had efforts blocked in front of goal.

But the reprieve for the Magpies did not last long as Jermyn's mishap enabled Davis to fire the visitors into a 61st minute lead.

Dorchester tried to hit back and a long range effort from Rodrigues was caught by Banks while from Jermyn's ball into the box, a looping header from Awuah was also cut out by the former Crystal Palace gloveman.

But Worthing still had more in their tank and Behcet was forced to beat down a firm 20 yard drive from Karl Akenhurst.

Having replaced both full backs to adopt a more attacking formation, the Magpies slowly started to look more threatening.

Awuah's 74th minute lay off was met by Fogden whose well struck effort was scooped up by Banks.

But Worthing defended well and it was not until the 86th minute that they were troubled again when a shot from Forbes was blocked and Jermyn blasted the rebound over the bar.

Memories of the away match at Thurrock must have flooded back to Behcet when his clearance rebounded off Davis but fortunately this time away from goal and he was able to gather safely.

Worthing must have thought that their goal would survive intact when Banks pulled off a stunning save with an outstretched foot to send a low drive from substitute Elliot Bent ballooning over the bar.

And in the end it required an inspirational moment of magic from Rodrigues to unlock the Rebels defence and force the tie to a replay at the The Victor Gladwish stadium tomorrow night (7.30pm).
