Dorchester denied

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester Town earned themselves a goalless draw with Coca-Cola League One side Yeovil Town in their final pre-season game at the Avenue Stadium last night.

Trialist Jones Awuah, back from injury, thought he had won the game in the final minute only to see his effort ruled out by the linesman's raised flag.

A left-foot shot from Charlie Henry had trialist keeper Alan Blayney at full stretch, and his parry fell to Awuah who tapped in from close range, but his joy was short-lived.

Magpies' director of football Shaun Brooks was pleased with what he saw. "It was a good workout for us. I thought that at times, against a better side, we played some good football.

"We got what we deserved in the end, we definitely didn't deserve to lose the game. We were a bit unfortunate right at the end with Jones' effort, it was a close one from where I was standing."

The Glovers were missing several first team members for the derby clash but still had the better of the game in terms of possession and attacking threat.

However, it was the Magpies who came closest to scoring when livewire Henry hit a fierce right-foot shot against the Yeovil post on the stroke of half-time.

Many of the visitor's best openings were thwarted by great defensive work from trialist Nathan Simpson in particular, who Brooks was impressed with.

"Nathan was excellent tonight I thought, very quick, good on the ball and he can tackle well. Scott Sampson performed equally well and the lads did well to keep a clean sheet."

Simon Evans was called into action on a few occasions in the second half but was more than up to the challenge of manager Russell Slade's attacking force.

The Magpies' stopper denied edge of the area efforts from both Jerahl Hughes and substitute Tom Clarke within a minute of each other.

The shot from Hughes came at the second time of asking after his initial effort was blocked by Roy O'Brien who injured himself in the process and left the field soon after holding his left elbow.

Brooks is hopeful his midfield general will be okay.

He said: "We've got to check on Roy, he was brave but took a knock to his elbow.

"We hope it's nothing too serious because he's been one of our strongest players in pre-season and has an important role in the team."

With decisions still to be made on the remaining trialists Brooks has already organised a game for them to impress in.

He added: "We're down at Hamworthy on Monday night to have a look at the young players and some trialists and I'm hoping to fit in a game for Thursday.

"All the trialists we've had have done well but obviously we can't take everyone on, we'll have to keep tabs on anyone we do let go of for future reference.

"Oscar Gonzalez and Josu Olaizola settled well in training and they should feature in our upcoming games, I thought the Yeovil game was too soon as I still haven't seen enough of them to throw them straight into the team."
