Mudge miss lets Dons off the hook

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester Town were forced to settle for a point against title-chasing AFC Wimbledon after Jamie Mudge missed a late penalty at the Jewson Stadium last night.

The Magpies took the lead in an evenly fought contest when Ryan Moss scrambled the ball home just before the hour.

But the Dons, second in Blue Square South, hit back with a Danny Kedwell header just eight minutes later. Mudge could have won all three points for the hosts but sent his 79th minute spot-kick wide.

Dorchester boss Shaun Brooks named an unchanged side from the 2-0 New Year's Day defeat to Bath City, but there were spots on the bench for the returning Gary Bowles, who had previously been out with illness, and Darren Watts, who spent December on loan at Winchester City.

Meanwhile, AFC Wimbledon hotshot Jon Main, the league's top scorer, suffered an injury in the build up to the game and was absent from the Dons' match-day squad.

The Magpies made a solid start to the game, keeping the ball well against their higher placed visitors, and more than matched the Dons in the opening exchanges.

But they almost gifted the away side the lead in the 12th minute. A through ball looked to be heading straight to Gareth Stewart but a miscommunication in the home defence saw Kevin Hill miscue a clearance straight to the feet of Tom Davis 35 yards.

The Dorchester skipper's blushes were spared however when Davis' effort sailed over the top.

Three minutes later, the Magpies forced visiting keeper James Pullen into action on two occasions. First, Mudge's turn and shot from 20 yards was palmed away before Moss saw a close range strike beaten away by Pullen at his near post.

Nick Crittenden looked lively early on, turning left-back Chris Hussey inside out on several occasions.

Wimbledon's Elliot Godfrey tried his luck from distance on 25 minutes and was not far away from finding Stewart's top left corner while at the other end, Wes Fogden could only fire over when put under pressure.

Kedwell then sent a low drive narrowly wide of the right-hand upright after strike partner Belal Aiteouakrim had robbed Mark Jermyn of possession.

As the half entered added time, Mudge played an intelligent pass into the path of Fogden who brought the ball down well but was thwarted by Pullen inside the Dons' penalty area.

And there was still time for Aiteouakrim to fire wide from 12 yards.

The visitors registered the first attempt of the second period as Kedwell headed wide from Hussey's right-sided cross.

Danny Clay found Mudge out on the left in the 55th minute and the Magpies' striker edged his way towards goal before seeing a cross-cum-shot drop agonisingly wide of the far post.

The hosts though, found the back of the net just four minutes later. Ronayne Marsh-Brown excellently dug out a deep cross when the ball looked to be heading out of play, and his centre created havoc in the box as a goal-mouth scramble ensued, which resulted in Moss forcing the ball over the line with a back heel.

Dorchester then had appeals for a penalty waved away, claiming Mudge's shot had struck the hand of Ben Judge.

AFC Wimbledon made their second change of the evening seconds later in an attempt to restore parity.

And it was the substitute Anthony Finn who won the free-kick which led to the Dons finding an equaliser midway through the second half.

Hussey curled the set-piece into the danger zone, where half-time substitute Jason Goodliffe flicked a header goalwards only to be denied by a superb Stewart save, however, the rebound was then nodded in by an unmarked Kedwell right in front of goal.

Dorchester's own replacement Mitchell Nicholson, who came on for Crittenden, looked to make an immediate impact but saw his 20-yard effort held by Pullen.

However, he did provide the hosts with the perfect opportunity to regain the lead with 11 minutes to play after he was tripped in the area by the towering presence of Dwane Lee.

But despite sending the keeper the wrong way, Mudge hit the spot-kick the wrong side of the left post and the score remained the same.

Strike partner Moss was then handed the chance to put the Magpies ahead once again but, from Hill's centre, the former Bashley man headed over from six yards.

Dorchester were almost made to pay for their wastefulness two minutes from time when Finn escaped the attentions of the home defenders only to pull his shot wide of goal with just Stewart to beat.
