Last-gasp Wes saves Magpies
by
Ky Capel
Wew Fogden scored with virtually the last kick of the game to secure
a point for Dorchester against 10-man Braintree Town.
Gareth William’s first-half brace put Braintree in the driving
seat at the Jewson Stadium, despite the Magpies having had the better
openings early on, before Wayne O’Sullivan was deemed to be
the last man when he brought down Ryan Moss and subsequently saw
red.
Dorchester huffed and puffed but had to wait until the 64th minute
for their opener, which came via the head of Roy O’Brien,
and then former Brighton man Fogden popped up in the fourth minute
of added time to save the day.
There was just one change to the Magpies’ XI that recorded
an epic 4-3 victory over Thurrock, O’Brien made his first
start since the second game of the season back in August, replacing
an unwell Gary Bowles in the process.
The Magpies almost took a fourth minute lead in emphatic fashion.
Last week’s hat-trick hero Jamie Mudge searched for an opening
on the edge of the Braintree box before being halted by a visiting
defender, but the loose ball fell to Nick Crittenden 20 yards out
and he saw his piledriver smash the underside of the crossbar and
bounce out.
The midfielder had another sight of goal three minutes later but
sent his effort wide of Braintree keeper Craig Holloway’s
left-hand post.
Moss displayed his power and persistence close to the Iron corner
flag before sending a low drive against the foot of the near post.
Holloway though looked well positioned to keep the strike out had
it been on target.
The hosts were much the better side in the early exchanges with
Jamie Gleeson the next to go close.
Fogden won a free-kick 25 yards out which he, Crittenden and Gleeson
worked to perfection, unfortunately though, the latter’s fizzing
drive whistled past the left upright.
However, against the run of the play, the visitors opened the scoring
with their first attempt at goal.
Kevin Hill, who retained the captain’s armband despite O’Brien’s
return, brought down Williams right on the periphery of his own
box.
The Braintree man dusted himself down before curling a precise
effort out of Gareth Stewart’s reach, deep into the left corner
of the net.
And it could have been 2-0 to the Iron but for Mark Jermyn’s
clearance off his own goal-line from Ryan Moran’s downward
header.
Seconds later though, Braintree did extend their advantage via
Williams’ second of the afternoon.
The visiting man brought down Chris Piper’s pass with assurance
before firing past the dive of Stewart.
The game was turned on its head somewhat on 33 minutes as Braintree
were reduced to 10 men.
Moss charged towards goal before being felled by O’Sullivan,
who as the man last man, was then given his marching orders. The
decision though was arguably somewhat harsh given the visiting defender
did get a touch of the ball.
Eight minutes before the break, O’Brien’s deep cross
was met by a late run and jump from Jermyn but directed wide of
goal.
Jermyn then had two further efforts saved by Holloway – a
header and a low drive from distance – but the Magpies were
unable to get off the mark by the time referee Mark Philpott blew
for half-time.
The away side made a defensive switch at the resumption of play
but Dorchester continued their desperate search for a way back into
the game.
And they were denied the perfect opportunity to do so when appeals
for a penalty, after Quinton had challenged Fogden, were waved away.
Shaun Brooks made his first change just ahead of the hour mark,
bringing midfielder Ronayne Marsh-Brown on in place of centre-back
Patrece Liburd.
Five minutes after making the switch, the Magpies’ boss saw
his side reduce the deficit. After a Moss header was tipped over
by Holloway, the Braintree gloveman could do nothing to keep out
O’Brien’s headed effort from the resultant corner delivered
by Crittenden.
Mudge had a shot blocked and Crittenden pulled a low drove wide
as the hosts maintained the initiative.
And Holloway had to be at his best in the 73rd minute to palm away
Mudge’s dangerous strike from distance.
Substitute Mitchell Nicholson turned brilliantly on the edge of
the Braintree box but failed to find the finish to match, and instead
sent his strike over the top.
As time ticked by, Dorchester’s chances of finding a way
through the Braintree rearguard looked to be diminishing. But in
the fourth and final minute of stoppage time, Crittenden pumped
a long ball forward towards Hill who knocked down into the path
of Fogden.
And the feisty midfielder pounced on the opportunity to salvage
a point by blasting beyond a helpless Holloway – to the roar
of the home support.
