Gamble forces Brooks to make big changes
by
Terry Spracklen
Dorchester boss Shaun Brooks endured 65 minutes of a below-par performance
from his first choice XI before making sweeping changes as his side
were beaten at Cherrywood Road.
Just Gary Bowles and Ivan Forbes remained from the outfield starting line-up and the fresher legs certainly helped as the substitutes enthusiastically took the game to their hosts and reduced the arrears through Leon Osei 16 minutes from time.
But Mark Gamble's two goals, scored in the 23rd and 65th minutes, proved enough for the Hampshire side to hold on for victory.
Brooks although happy with the performance of his substitutes, was far from impressed with his more senior men.
He said: "I think the starting XI have had too many plaudits and too many pats on the back.
"That display was not what we wanted and I thought they were awful to be honest. Our intention was to put on a good performance and to try and give people 90 minutes before the real stuff starts next week.
"But the performance wasn't good enough so we made wholesale changes and the second side that came on set about them and played with some energy and enthusiasm. In the end we could have got back in the game and were the better team for the last 25 minutes.
The starting XI didn't set about the game in the right manner and hopefully it's a lesson learnt for this week."
In the opening minutes Nathan Miles failed to cut out a long ball from Bowles enabling Ryan Moss a shooting chance, but keeper Lyall Beazley saved at his near post to deny the former Bashley striker.
But it soon became apparent that Farnborough were showing more urgency than their Blue Square South visitors and Nick Hutchings made a good save at his far post to keep out Michael Charles' header.
Magpie Kevin Hill and Ryan Scott for the hosts both fired long-range shots over the crossbar before Bowles gifted the ball to Charles inside the penalty area. But Hutchings was equal to the Farnborough striker's lob attempt.
The breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Charles centred to Gamble who scored with a close range header.
Another slick passing movement between Charles and Leigh Rumbold culminated in a shot wide by Nic Ciardini. Then a surging run from the impressive Gamble ended with a 20-yard drive inches wide of the near post.
Magpies' efforts were few but Nick Crittenden had a shot deflected wide while Beazley gathered a looping header from Hill.
Dorchester faired no better after the break and went two-down in the 65th minute when Gamble latched on to a route one special from Beazley to round Hutchings and slot home.
That proved enough for Brooks who introduced all of his available substitutes in one go.
And it was Osei who made an early impression, pulling a goal back with a diagonal low shot into the corner after a jinking run along the 18-yard line.
Dorchester were suddenly playing with more belief and interest, and quite literally looked a different side.
When Forbes, one of two outfield players to play 90 minutes, played a ball inside to Mitchell Nicholson, the young Australian was denied by a smart stop from Beazley. Nicholson had another attempt cut out by the Farnborough keeper while Darren Watts sent a shot over and Osei lashed a free-kick into the defensive wall.
But Tom Mitchell nearly gifted the British Gas Business Premier
Division side a last-ditch third goal when he lost possession to
skipper Steve Laidler who inexplicably tried to pass when shooting
seemed the obvious choice.
