Sunk by the Fish

Dorset Echoby Echo Reporter

Dorchester's lack of a cutting edge was punished at a sun-kissed Champion Hill Stadium They say strikers win you games and in Wesley Thomas, Fisher Athletic possess a very talented one.

Thomas' lethal finishing when given a mere sight of goal ensured the South London side claimed all three Blue Square South points.

Dorchester's failure to find the net will leave manager Shaun Brooks with a lot to ponder over his mis-firing front line.

The Magpies enjoyed the lion's share of possession, dominated for large spells and missed a host of glorious chances including a penalty.

And still came away from this match with a heavy defeat.

Nick Crittenden was the first culprit for the visitors.

In the opening five minutes, Fisher's generous back four allowed the winger two clear shots at goal from close range but both efforts lacked the power or direction to trouble Chris Lewington in the Fisher goal.

It was a promising start for the Magpies. Ryan Moss nearly made the early pressure tell shortly after but for a saving tackle by Fish skipper Scott Gooding just when the forward was about to pull the trigger.

The opening exchanges were all Dorchester but then they fell behind to Fisher's first forage into the opposition half.

Luke Hickie and Damian Batt combined well before a defence splitting pass allowed Thomas to fire into the bottom corner.

Patrece Liburd never got to grips with the forward's pace and was left in no-man's-land when a lose ball fell to Thomas on 22 minutes who hit a fine first-time volley.

This time Gareth Stewart parried well but Magpies old boy Jones Awuah was on hand to nod home the rebound.

Fisher were content to sit back and pick the visitors off on the break but Dorchester should have pulled one back shortly before half-time.

The Fish failed to cut out a searching cross that found Kevin Hill whose resulting header crashed off the bar and away to safety.

Things got worse in the second half, on 52 minutes full back Sanchez Ming was allowed a 40 yard unopposed run in Magpies' territory before unleashing an unstoppable cross-cum-shot that left Stewart motionless.

On 66 minutes, Kevin Hill's miserable afternoon continued when he was once more left unmarked in the Fisher box, his header this time going narrowly wide from point blank range.

Dorchester again wasted a glorious chance to register a goal with 20 minutes left on the clock.

A stray hand in the Fisher box saw the referee point to the spot but Lewington guessed right to palm Ryan Moss' effort away.

A fruitless afternoon was compounded late on when that man Thomas latched on to another through ball before guiding an effort beyond Stewart.
