O'Donnell's winning start as Fish sunk

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Brian O'Donnell's reign as acting manager got off to the perfect start as Dorchester Town recorded their biggest league win of the season - beating a woeful, 10-man Fisher Athletic 3-0 at the Jewson Stadium.

Nick Crittenden converted an early penalty after visiting defender Joe Doherty was dismissed for handball before second-half strikes from Mitchell Nicholson and Tom Clarke sealed a comfortable night's work for the Magpies.

O'Donnell made two changes from the 4-0 loss to Eastleigh for his first game in charge.

The new man at the helm welcomed Ryan Moss back from injury and Roy O'Brien out of exile but Danny Clay, who like O'Brien was originally axed by the club almost two weeks ago, began a two-match suspension for 10 accumulated bookings.

Ronayne Marsh-Brown was also absent from the team sheet after he left the club while flu restricted Jamie Gleeson to the bench.

The Magpies were handed a decent opportunity to forge ahead with just six minutes gone when visiting keeper Jack Crawford was forced to pick up Alex Bentley's weak back pass due to the advancing presence of Clarke.

However, Bentley atoned for his error by clearing the resultant free-kick which was drilled low across goal by Nicholson.

Crittenden then blazed a 30-yard set-piece over the top before giving the Magpies the lead on the quarter hour.

Gary Bowles' free-kick just inside the Fisher half was floated into the box where Moss out-jumped Crawford.

The loose ball kindly for Mark Jermyn who headed towards goal but the ball was prevented from crossing line by the hand of Doherty, who was then shown the red card without any hesitation.

Crittenden stepped up and dispatched the spot-kick with confidence and power, firing low into the bottom left corner.

Left-back Jake Smeeton then fired an effort from distance wide of the visitors' goal as Dorchester looked to build on their advantage.

Crittenden could, and probably should, have extended that lead in the 25th minute but saw his close-range header from a pin-point Darren Watts cross saved by Crawford.

Crittenden turned provider a minute later with Gary Bowles heading into the arms of the Athletic custodian after rising highest from a corner.

Moss was the next Dorchester man to go close, beating Crawford to Clarke's right-wing delivery but heading over the top.

The hosts looked extremely comfortable and were predictably enjoying the majority of possession against the 10 men of Fisher.

But they were unable to find a second goal before the half-time break. The best opportunity of the final exchanges saw Moss pull a shot wide of the near post after a breakaway move.

The home pressure continued early in the second period as Watts sent a drive high and wide from 18 yards out.

The young midfielder then found himself through on goal in the 49th minute but was denied by a last-ditch tackle from Rico Morris.

Fisher recorded their first effort at goal three minutes after but the volley, from Michael Spencer, summed up their evening - poor.

However, the Magpies were soon back on the offensive. A misplaced pass put Moss in the clear but just as the county town side's top scorer was about to the pull the trigger, the ball took a massive bobble and Moss sliced his strike well wide of goal.

Clarke showed tenacity to gain a sight of goal midway through the half but then took too many touches inside the box before finally releasing a shot and forcing a save out of Crawford.

The subsequent corner though, was whipped in by Crittenden and firmly headed home by the onrushing Nicholson.

With the lead extended, O'Donnell gave the returning Moss a welcome respite and handed a senior debut to Dorchester Under-18 star Neil Kellaway.

Clarke put the home side into an unassailable lead with 14 minutes to go courtesy of a gift from the Fisher keeper.

Gary Bowles' through pass had too much on it and looked to be a comfortable gather for Crawford, however, he failed to hold onto the ball and Clarke gratefully accepted, slotting home into an empty net for his first goal in Dorchester colours.

Dorchester tried their luck at every oppor-tunity, one of which saw Kellaway head narrowly over from Bowles' centre.

Jermyn teed up Clarke with six minutes left on the clock but the forward's effort was always rising.

And Clarke had the final chance of the game when he was played in by Crittenden. The county town man lifted the ball over the oncoming Crawford from an acute angle but couldn't direct his effort on target.
