Magpies’ miserable home run continues
by
Ky Capel
Dorchester's search for an elusive home win this season goes on
after losing to in-form Hayes & Yeading at the Jewson Stadium.
Goals from Will Hendry and captain Tom Cadmore gave United a 2-0 half-time lead, which Jamie Mudge reduced in the 75th minute.
But the Magpies got what they deserved while the visitors stretched their winning streak to eight successive games.
A change in dugout did not stop the home rot either with manager Shaun Brooks opting to move him and his coaching staff to the opposing bench.
Following Tuesday night's Setanta Shield exit, the county town boss made seven changes.
Club captain Patrece Liburd, Ronayne Benjamin Marsh-Brown, Gary Bowles, Nick Crittenden, Danny Clay, Kevin Hill and Ryan Moss all returned to the Magpies' starting XI while Darren Watts, Tom Mitchell, Jamie Gleeson, Leon Osei and Nathan Peprah-Annan dropped the bench.
Dorchester were presented with the first chance on goal as early as the fifth minute. Jake Smeeton set Mudge free down the left and he crossed into the box.
Visiting keeper Aaron Howe came to collect but was obstructed by one of his defenders and the ball fell to Wes Fogden 10 yards out. But the Brighton loanee could not keep his effort down.
Hayes & Yeading then took the game to the hosts as Ram Marwa brought a full stretch save from Gareth Stewart, and Scott Fitzgerald glanced a header wide.
A last-ditch block from Hayes skipper Cadmore, in the 12th minute, denied Mudge a clean strike at goal before Fogden had a goal ruled out for handball.
Liburd's searching pass was knocked down into the path of Fogden by Moss, and the midfielder beat Howe to the ball before slotting home. However, referee Amey awarded a free-kick, claiming Fogden had used his arm to control the ball.
Clay then drove over from 25 yards following a well-worked corner routine while at the other end Smeeton prevented Marwa from surely opening the scoring.
But just three minutes later, the away side were ahead. Danny Allen-Page's cross from the right found Hendry who took a touch and, with his back to goal, hooked a shot into Stewart's top right corner, leaving the home keeper with no chance.
And Hayes & Yeading found themselves 2-0 up on 24 minutes when Cadmore headed home Gregory's free-kick near the right corner flag.
It took 32 minutes for Dorchester to notch their first shot on target. Hill's header fell for Fogden just inside the box but his acrobatic effort, which took a deflection on the way, was easy for Howe to deal with.
In the last action of the half, Dorchester would have been three down had someone in red got on the end of Fitzgerald's low drive across goal.
The trend continued early in the second period as a flowing Hayes move was almost finished off by Marwa, but the midfielder's effort lacked power and Stewart was able to collect at his near post.
James Mulley's cross made its way to the back stick where Josh Scott was coming in. The left-winger beat Stewart with his shot but not Marsh-Brown, who managed to divert the danger at the expense of a corner.
Bowles, having earlier been booked for a clumsy challenge, was fortunate to stay on the pitch just past the hour when his rash tackle on Hendry received only a stern talking to from Amey.
Dorchester were not at the races and Stewart had to be at his best to deny visiting substitute Staforde Palmer. The home side though, were unexpectedly handed a lifeline by Mudge 15 minutes from time. A Crittenden corner, which Mudge helped win, was missed by Howe and Mudge poked home at the far post for his fourth goal of the season.
Dorchester tried to find an equaliser but it was the visitors who came closest to scoring again - Palmer once more unable to beat Stewart and Kieran Knight stopped in his tracks by a Bowles recovery tackle. |
