Dorchester have now gone 11 games without a win after relinquishing
a two-goal lead at home to Newport County in their FA Cup second
qualifying round clash.
Ryan Moss gave the home side the lead in the 17th minute and doubled
the Magpies' advantage shortly after half-time when he converted
a penalty at the second time of asking.
But a spot-kick at the other end nine minutes later gave County
a lifeline and they found an equaliser with just six minutes left
on the clock to force a replay.
Mark Jermyn made a dramatic return from injury to take his place
in the Magpies' line-up despite manager Shaun Brooks ruling him
out of contention earlier in the week.
Gary Bowles was struggling with an achilles problem and failed
to make the squad so club captain Patrece Liburd took his place
at the back. However, Kevin Hill kept hold of the armband.
Dorchester made a fairly positive start, taking the game to Newport
.
But it was Gareth Stewart in the home goal who had to make the
first save of the match, diving low to his left to keep out Rob
Duffy's 20-yard free-kick. Moments later though, Moss blazed over
from the edge of the area.
A Nick Crittenden corner in the 16th minute caused problems for
the visitors but the Exiles were able to hack Wes Fogden's attempt
away from danger.
Then, just a minute later, Moss opened the scoring. Jamie Mudge
collected the ball on the left-hand side, turned and then delivered
a low teasing cross.
The Newport backline looked for the offside flag but it never came
and Moss stretched at the far post to hook the ball high into the
net.
The match hit a quiet patch until just before the half-hour when
Hill headed over from a Crittenden cross.
A better connection with his head from Duffy would surely have
produced an equaliser after he beat Stewart in the air to meet Danny
Rose's centre. Instead though, the Magpies were let off the hook.
Rose then played a one-two with Duffy 20 yards out but the former's
shot lacked power and was easy for Stewart.
Dorchester had several corners in a matter of minutes as the half
drew to a close but the pressure failed to lead to any real efforts
at goal.
Newport, who had offered no attacking threat in the first period,
made a change at half-time with Craig Hughes replacing Richard Evans.
But after just seven minutes of the restart, they found themselves
further behind with Moss converting a penalty at the second attempt.
Mudge's cross hit the hand of left-back Martin Giles who was only
a matter of yards away from the Dorchester striker.
Referee Newell's decision to award the spot kick was met by stern
protests from the visiting contingent.
But they appeared to have been reprieved when Newport keeper Glyn
Thompson guessed correctly and saved Moss' effort.
That was until the referee's assistant intervened, claiming Thomp-son
had jumped in front of his line before the kick was taken.
The Exiles felt further aggrieved. Adie Harris took his protests
too far and was booked for dissent.
Moss composed himself before firing his second bite of the cherry
straight down the middle.
Thompson then entered the referee's notebook for his displeasure.
The Magpies looked to be in control and heading for their first
win in 11 games, not to mention their first win at home.
However, they allowed the visitors back into the mix as Hill slid
into Rose and conceded a penalty.
Duffy was coolness personified as he gently strode forward before
dispatching his kick into the bottom right corner.
The controversy continued immediately after the goal as an off
the ball incident involving Hughes and Danny Clay resulted in the
latter being left in a heap.
A mini-melee broke out and, after talks with his assistant, the
man in black produced a yellow for the Exiles' substitute.
Mudge went close to connecting with a Mitchell Nicholson free-kick
on 77 minutes and then shot low into the body of Thompson following
Moss' flick.
Former Terra Ashley Vickers, who was eligible to play after turning
a loan spell at the Exiles into a more permanent deal, was inches
away from connecting with a dangerous Harris set-piece eight minutes
before the end.
But just two minutes later, County drew level. Jake Smeeton was
penalised for a foul right on the edge of his own penalty area.
Rose's kick was forced into a crowd of bodies and appeared to take
a nick off Hill before finding its way past the helpless Stewart.
And that was the final action of a tie that could have provided
Dorchester with a welcome boost, but instead the Magpies threw away
a two-goal advantage for the second time this season and will now
contest a replay in Wales on Wednesday night.
