Last-gasp Ryan denied
by
Ky Capel
Dorchester Town were denied a famous FA Cup victory at Oxford United
in the last few seconds of a tense encounter.
The Magpies had brilliantly kept the U’s at bay for the whole
90 minutes before Jamie Mudge crossed for team-mate Ryan Moss in
the final minute of stoppage time.
The visiting striker stooped low and beat home keeper Billy Turley
only to see the effort ruled out for an alleged handball.
Manager Shaun Brooks made just one change from the 2-0 win at Bishop’s
Stortford the previous Saturday.
Gary Bowles, back from a one-match ban, partnered Kevin Hill at
the heart of defence with Patrece Liburd dropping to the bench.
Tom Mitchell returned from an ankle injury but was named among
the seven substitutes.
Dorchester’s Gareth Stewart was the first of the two keepers
forced into action when in the fourth minute he had to keep out
a header from Eddie Mitchell.
But straight up the other end, Jamie Gleeson tried his luck from
distance and although the strike lacked any real power, Turley still
had to gather.
A Gleeson free-kick close to the right touchline was dangerously
delivered and Hill was inches away from connecting at the back post.
Stewart, who had an unsuccessful trial with the Yellows in pre-season,
then came to the rescue in the 12th minute with a fantastic sprawling
save to deny James Constable after the Oxford man was put clean
through by strike partner Lewis Haldane.
Phil Trainer saw a low drive deflected wide by one of his own players
before Hill sent a header from Nick Crittenden’s corner over
the top.
Moss and Mudge combined well in the 24th minute with the former
heading on for the latter. But Mudge sent his lobbed effort wide
of the mark.
Then, in the same minute, the hosts wasted a glorious chance to
take the lead. Haldane broke free down the right and delivered a
pin-point cross onto the head of Constable, who somehow managed
to plant his header the wrong side of the post when it seemed easier
to score.
And Oxford missed another great opportunity just before the half-hour.
Sam Deering’s free-kick on the left was flicked on by Constable
but centre-half Chris Willmott nodded over from six yards out.
Haldane set Constable haring towards goal once more and the Shrewsbury
Town loanee sent a fierce drive over Stewart’s crossbar.
Dorchester withstood the remaining pressure to go in at the half-time
interval level.
But they were lucky to still be on equal terms 40 seconds after
the restart when Trainer blazed over from 12 yards.
Moss almost profited on a mistake by the Oxford defence but keeper
Turley won the race by a whisker and cleared the danger, while feeling
the force of a committed Moss at the same time.
Wes Fogden won a free-kick 25 yards out on the hour mark but after
a cleverly worked set-piece, Gleeson’s touch let him down
and Oxford got a challenge in before he could pull the trigger.
However, the rebound fell to Crittenden who forced Turley to get
down and make a save.
And the home gloveman had to be at his best to keep out Mudge’s
thunderbolt from 20 yards following Fogden’s lay-off.
A minute later, at the other end, substitute Yemi Odubade kept
Stewart on his toes with a volleyed effort.
Stewart then had to gather at the second attempt from Deering’s
long-range shot with Haldane closing in.
Hill provided a crucial block to deny Odubade on 79 minutes, just
seconds before Dorchester could have taken a vital lead.
Moss outmuscled Willmott and found himself in acres of space running
towards goal, but instead of squaring to Mudge in the penalty he
lashed a shot high and wide.
As the game headed into its final stages defender Matt Day had
Stewart worried with a smash from all of 30 yards that whistled
past the right-hand post.
And in the final minute of stoppage time the Magpies thought they
had secured their spot in the second round for the first time since
1981.
Mudge received possession on the left and sent in a dangerous low
cross, which Moss met and forced over the goal-line.
The 376 away supporters went wild, as did the Dorchester bench,
but the match officials brought the celebrations to an abrupt end
following a prolonged discussion and the two teams will do battle
once more at the Jewson Stadium on Tuesday, November 18.
