Forbes foils Pompey
by
Ky Capel
Ivan Forbes scored his fourth goal of pre-season to help Dorchester
earn a draw with Premier League Portsmouth at the Jewson Stadium
last night.
The Portuguese netted seven minutes from the end, scoring past
England keeper David James, after an own goal from Ronayne Benjamin
Marsh-Brown had given the FA Cup holders the lead.
Dorchester manager Shaun Brooks, whose side travel to Portland
United tonight (7.45pm), was delighted with his players' efforts.
He said: "It was a good display and I think we can take a lot
of confidence. We used 22 players and they all acquitted themselves
well.
"Portsmouth had some decent chances but so did we towards
the end. It's as good as you can expect playing against a Premier
League side."
One player who looks to have done enough to earn himself a deal
at the county town club is forward Leon Osei while fellow trialist
Michael McEntagart, an ex-Everton Academy keeper, also received
praised.
Brooks added: "We've seen enough from Leon and we'd like to
offer him something. He's an exciting player, there's still a lot
to work on but we'd be foolish not to get him on a contract.
"We'll have a look at Michael against Portland but I thought
he was excellent - very confident."
The only negative to come out of last night was an injury to Mark
Jermyn. Brooks said: "Mark took a bad knock and he's got a
sore knee. We're going to try and get him scanned as soon as possible
but right back is not an area we've got a lot of cover in."
Captain for the evening Darren Watts had the first attempt for
Dorchester but his effort was easily held by David James.
Pompey's Richard Hughes had two good attempts, both going wide,
before Jermyn went off after damaging the medial knee ligament following
a challenge with Djimi Traore.
Jamie Mudge looked to latch on to Mitchell Nicholson's long ball
but James rushed out of his area to head away the danger only for
his header to find Kevin Hill 35 yards out.
The midfield man tried his luck but saw his shot drift wide of
the right-hand post.
Just past the half-hour mark Mudge did well to keep the ball in
play and find Nicholson on the left side of the penalty area, who
cut the ball back for Watts on the edge of the box. However, the
skipper's volley went wide of James' goal.
Four minutes after the interval, Arnold Mvuemba forced keeper McEntagart
to tip over after good work from Sean Davis.
And the Premier League outfit took the lead just before the hour
courtesy of an own goal from Marsh-Brown.
Mvuemba crossed to the back post where Traore headed back into
the danger area and the ball hit the helpless full-back, beating
McEntagart in the Dorchester goal.
A minute later McEntagart tipped an excellent chip from Davis on
to the crossbar as the visitors continued to press.
Osei made a good burst forward shortly after but his shot lacked
the quality to match his run.
The Magpies went close to equalising on 78 minutes when Forbes
crossed low into the path of Ryan Moss, but pressure from Traore
prevented the home striker having a clear shot.
The hosts did manage to pull level with just seven minutes to go.
Forbes beat James to Roy O'Brien's long pass and tucked the ball
home to the delight of the Avenue faithful.
Portsmouth almost regained their advantage two minutes later but
substitute Taser Hassan saw his volleyed effort come back off the
woodwork.
It was Dorchester though who should surely have taken the win late
on when trialist Akim was unmarked in the box, but he scuffed his
shot to the dismay of the 966 spectators.
Brooks added: "Akim could've made a name for himself, but
we're not going to keep him on."
