Mudge clinches point for Magpies

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester remain unbeaten in Blue Square South after drawing with St Albans at the Jewson Stadium in a game that could have gone either way.

Paul Hakim put the visitors ahead in the tenth minute only to see Jamie Mudge open his league account with the equaliser four minutes later.

Both sides had chances to take all three points but in the end were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.

Magpies' boss Shaun Brooks drafted in Nathan Peprah-Annan to replace the injured Roy O'Brien, with Gary Bowles moving to the centre of defence and Peprah-Annan covering at right-back.

Dorchester made a fairly bright start to the game, looking for the early breakthrough, but it was the visitors who struck the opener with their first effort at goal.

Hakim played a neat one two with his strike partner Simon Martin and the former found himself with just Gareth Stewart to beat. And the visiting striker went around the home keeper before tucking the ball into the back of the Magpies' net.

Unlike so often last season, Dorchester didn't crumble after going behind, and they hit back soon after.

Nick Crittenden beat two men before sliding an excellent pass through to Mudge, and the Magpies' forward kept his cool to drive low past Paul Bastock from inside the box. The match then entered a quiet period until Stewart was called into action on 27 minutes.

A Jonathan Hunt free-kick from 25 yards struck the Dorchester wall, but the former Bournemouth keeper kept his eyes on the ball and palmed the shot away.

At the other end, Bastock had to be quick off his line to beat Ryan Moss to the ball, before good build up play resulted in Jake Smeeton crossing for Mudge with the latter unable to direct his effort goalwards.

Mudge was eager to add to his tally and, moments later, forced Bastock into a save after being found by Leon Osei 20 yards out.

The game turned once more and it was St Albans who were now in the ascendancy.

Hunt's corner was cleared by Patrece Liburd and Sean Ridgway picked up the loose ball before driving a shot towards goal.

Stewart got behind the effort but could only parry and James Quilter reacted quickest.

However, the St Albans man was thwarted by an excellent stop from the home keeper, who spread himself expertly to keep the scores even.

Mudge almost capitalised on some hesitant defending, but was unable to gain sufficient power on his shot, enabling Bastock to gather comfortably.

James Fisher wasted a good opportunity with a free-kick, shooting high from just over 20 yards out, before Hakim dragged an effort wide when St Albans had a four on three advantage.

The Magpies' injury curse struck yet again when Peprah-Annan landed awkwardly and was subsequently replaced by Ronayne Benjamin Marsh-Brown, for his first competitive appearance.

The final action of the half saw Hunt fire wide from Hakim's pull back.

Dorchester came out for the second period with intent and almost took the lead. Moss outmuscled Quilter and crossed to the back stick for Mudge, who headed across goal for Kevin Hill.

Unfortunately the header was just behind Hill, but Crittenden picked up the pieces only to shoot wide of the right-hand post.

Another cross that just evaded its target saw Crittenden's delivery fall inches behind the head of Moss.

The ever-reliable Hill suffered a lapse in concentration when his header back to Stewart found Hakim all alone in the area. Luckily for the ex-Torquay midfielder, Hakim dragged his shot wide.

The Magpies had another let off when a Hassan Sulaiman cross evaded everyone moments later Dorchester, and Mudge, should have got their second of the game with five minutes left on the clock.

A great pass from Smeeton across the ground found Mudge with just Bastock to beat. However, the Magpies' number ten could only hit the body of the Saints' gloveman while the rebound fell to substitute Mitchell Nicholson some 30 yards out and his first time effort, with Bastock stranded, drifted over the top of the crossbar.

In stoppage time, Stewart was tackled by Lee Clarke following Liburd's back pass. Fortunately though, the angle was always against the St Albans sub and he shot into the side netting.
