Students hit back
by
Terry Spracklen
Team Bath overturned a two-goal deficit to deny Shaun Brooks' side
their first home win of the season.
The Magpies looked comfortable with their two-goal first half cushion. Jamie Mudge saw an effort deflect in off Team Bath skipper Gary Warren before he hit a second which curled around the Students' keeper Jake Meredith.
But when Roneyne Marsh-Brown tripped Steve Abbot to concede a 58th minute penalty, which was emphatically converted by Marc Canham, Dorchester lost their fluency and began to look nervous.
The Students rallied to the cause and carved out an equaliser eight minutes from time.
Warren made amends for his own goal by planting a powerful header past Gareth Stewart from a right-wing corner taken by substitute Micky Bell after Gary Bowles had cleared away a goalbound strike from Takumi Ake.
The opening 20 minutes were unusually quiet with Dorchester holding the upper hand territor-ially without seriously troubling Meredith.
A fifth minute lay-off from Ryan Moss found strike partner Mudge but his shot from 20 yards cleared the crossbar.
Six minutes later, a Moss volley also flew over. But the Magpies broke the deadlock after 18 minutes when a Nick Crittenden corner was nodded down by Kevin Hill for Mudge whose angled low shot was inadvertently turned in to his own net by Warren under pressure from Patrece Liburd.
The first real threat from the Students came after 25 minutes when Mike Perrott's pass found Dean Smith but his shot across goal rose up over the crossbar to safety.
A long ball from Marsh-Brown was well read by Meredith who raced out to gather but there was nothing that the visiting gloveman could do when Jamie Gleeson produced a pinpoint pass down the left wing for Mudge to run on to and he rounded the last defender before curling a low shot into the far corner.
Meredith then prevented Dorchester taking a three-goal interval lead when he stooped to cut out a 30-yard effort from Crittenden.
After the break, Dorchester looked comfortable for a while and when Moss was brought down 30 yards from goal, Crittenden played a deep free-kick to the far post where Bowles produced a firm header which was clawed away by Meredith.
But the turning point came with the 58th minute penalty award for a trip by Marsh-Brown on Abbott which saw Canham reduce the arrears.
Buoyed by their sudden breakthrough, the Students surged forward for the remainder of the second half looking for an equaliser.
Warren sent a far post header wide, Stewart pushed away a fierce Canham drive while a curled shot from Bell only just rolled wide.
A long clearance from Meredith found substitute Matt Cooper but he lobbed wide.
There was a brief respite for the hosts when Mudge shook off several challenges only to pull his centre behind Moss.
Minutes later Bowles had superbly intercepted a shot from Takumi to prevent a certain goal but the respite lasted barely a minute as from the resultant Bell corner, Warren headed home.
Strangely, Dorchester then seemed to gain more time on the ball and very nearly found a winner when substitute Leon Osei latched on to a Gleeson cross but dragged his shot wide.
Team Bath also had a chance to snatch victory when a late Bell
free-kick was met at the far post by Abbot who headed wide from
six yards.
