Fogden foils Wings

Dorset Echoby Devin Ward

Dorchester secured their second Blue Square South point in as many games as they battled to a goal-less draw at a wet Park View Road Stadium.

In slippery conditions on a remarkably good playing surface, there was plenty of flowing football on show.

It was Welling who began the stronger putting the Magpies under severe pressure in the opening few minutes.

Lee Blackburn was the first to go close, however, his shot was charged down resulting in a corner.

A minute later Ryan Martin was played through after a Dorian Smith ball, but under pressure from the covering Wes Fogden, Martin saw his effort saved by the onrushing Gareth Stewart before Fogden cleared the ball to safety.

On eight minutes Fogden saved the Magpies again as his interception denied Blackburn a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Smith then set up Ellis Green who should perhaps have done better despite pressure from Stewart.

The Wings continued to dominate and may feel aggrieved not to have had a penalty after a push from Ronayne Benjamin Marsh-Brown caused Joe Healy to lose his footing.

Dorchester's first real chance of the game fell to Kevin Hill after a searching ball from Gary Bowles found Ryan Moss, his cross fell kindly for Hill although the midfielder was unable to find the target with his header.

Dorchester began to find their feet and the game turned into a neat passing encounter more akin to the Football League.

With the half-time whistle approaching the game had really become a midfield tussle with very little to trouble either gloveman.

The Magpies started the second half brightly and on 48 minutes Nick Crittenden volleyed an effort from just outside the area, the deflected shot resulted in Dorch-ester's first corner of the game.

On 50 minutes it was Welling's turn to go close, the impressive and very pacey wing-back Craig Braham-Barrett ran down the wing and cut in but fortunately for Stewart he shot wide.

Three minutes later Braham-Barrett turned provider, excel-lently controlling a crossfield ball before squaring to Blackburn who was denied by an outstanding point blank save from Stewart.

Mitchell Nicholson came on midway through the second half for Hill and nearly made an immediate impact.

He chased a long ball over the top and bravely went in with the oncoming Scott Andrews, and as the rebound ran loose Crittenden pounced, although his shot went just wide with Andrews stranded.

Just minutes later Nicholson went close again, this time the hardworking Moss turned his marker and ran to the by-line before crossing to the back post where, stretching to reach the ball, Nicholson headed wide.

At the other end Welling also looked to break the deadlock although a solid Dorchester back four were adept at preventing too many chances. Blackburn went for a long-range curling shot while Stewart moved to cover the shot, the ball though, dropped just wide of his post.

The last ten minutes saw chances for both sides with the best opportunity falling to Frankie Chappell who headed just over the Magpies' goal.

The result on the back of the draw with Team Bath will see the Magpies start to grow in confidence.

It was a solid performance all round with Fogden and Bowles particularly impressing while the likes of Tom Mitchell and Moss worked tirelessly
