Weston break Magpies' unbeaten start

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester Town's unbeaten start to the new season was ended by Weston-super-Mare at the Jewson Stadium yesterday.

Marc McGregor gave the Seagulls a 23rd minute lead that Jamie Mudge cancelled out 11 minutes later with an exceptional effort.

Bu the Magpies failed to push on from there and went down to a Darren Mullings toe poke 12 minutes before the final whistle to leave them 13th in the Blue Square South table with six points.

Dorchester boss Shaun Brooks made two changes to Saturday's line-up. Gary Bowles returned to the defence in place of Alex Browne while Ronayne Benjamin Marsh-Brown was preferred to Nathan Peprah-Annan at right back.

Jamie Gleeson was among the substitutes after recovering from a knee injury.

The first opening fell Weston's way but, after an accurate through pass from Mullings, fellow midfielder Dean Grubb shot wide.

The visitors did have the ball in the net on 14 minutes. However, referee Simon Knapp had already blown for a foul on home keeper Gareth Stewart before Mullings lashed the ball into an empty net.

The Magpies struggled to find any rhythm early on as several passes went astray.

And they were punished for a misplaced pass in the 23rd minute as McGregor gave Weston the lead.

Grubb intercepted Danny Clay's pass and was instantly helped by Jake Smeeton's untimely slip. The Weston man then delivered a pin-point cross on to the head of the unmarked McGregor who put his effort beyond Stewart.

Michael Walker came on for Bowles minutes later with the latter still suffering the effects of the illness that kept him out of Saturday's 4-4 draw at Newport.

Dorchester though, got themselves back on level terms with an exquisite goal from Mudge.

A good tackle from Smeeton started the move and the Magpies' left back then found Nicholson in the centre circle.

The young Aussie moved the ball forward to Clay who then passed to Mudge.

There looked to be little on for the home forward but as he advanced to the left corner of the Weston penalty area Mudge sent a delicate chip over keeper Ryan Northmore and into the far corner of the goal.

Just a minute later and Dorchester presented the Seagulls with a great opportunity to hit back.

Walker held back McGregor right on the edge of his own box and was subsequently booked for his misdemeanour.

However, Stewart did well to hold onto Ben Wells' low drive.

Mudge was in confident mood following his goal and almost doubled his tally on 38 minutes.

The former Exeter City man turned brilliantly in the opposing box before firing in a shot with his left peg that Northmore parried to safety - just beyond the advancing Nick Crittenden.

Weston broke away immediately and Stewart had to be alert to clear the danger before Marvin Brown could profit.

Minutes into the second half and Marsh-Brown sent a 25-yard effort wide while at the other end McGregor also tried his luck from distance but was thwarted by Stewart.

Crittenden showed great determination to get a shot away but was rushed into it and had to poke at the ball with his left foot while under pressure.

Moments later Mudge blazed over from 12 yards following Marsh-Brown's cut back.

Wells, in the clear, then wasted a glorious chance for the away side as poor control allowed the ball to run to Stewart.

Ryan Moss was denied his second goal in as many games by the assistant's flag.

Substitute Leon Osei showed strength and power before delivering a cross-cum-shot that Moss tucked home at the back stick. However, his and the home support's celebrations were brought to an abrupt halt as the goal was chalked off for offside.

McGregor could not repeat his earlier effort and headed wide from Wells' free-kick with 16 minutes to go.

Four minutes later though, and the visitors restored their advantage through Mullings.

A Wells corner was prevented from going out by skipper Charlie Comyn-Platt and then touched on by defensive partner Cedric Abraham for Mullings to nick the ball home from close range.

The nearest the Magpies came to fashioning a second equaliser was from a Crittenden corner when Clay was unable to get enough contact to direct a shot on goal.

And the match ended in the same way as last season's corresponding fixture.
