Wes inflicts Worcester woe

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

A Wes Fogden double helped Dorchester Town to their first Blue Square South win of 2009.

The Magpies went ahead against Worcester City through Fogden but saw their advantage wiped out within a minute when Graham Ward struck from distance.

Dorchester’s former Brighton man netted his second of the afternoon before Ryan Moss’ late effort sealed a satisfactory afternoon for the home side, who remain 14th in the table but are now level on points with City.

Shaun Brooks enjoyed the luxury of naming an unchanged XI for the third game in succession. The only change that was made saw Tom Mitchell return from his club suspension and take a place on the bench.

It was the visitors who had the first sight of goal when, in the sixth minute, Matthew Dinsmore stripped Fogden of possession and shot harmlessly wide from 25 yards.

Dorchester forced two early corners but to no avail while at the other end Mark Jermyn made a vital challenge to deny Matthew Dodd after Marco Adaggio’s through pass.

A third corner for the hosts provided their first shot, but Kevin Hill fired over from the edge of the box following keeper Danny McDonnell’s weak punch under pressure.

Adaggio went close from his side’s first corner of the match. Dinsmore and Ward performed a short corner with the latter swinging in the eventual delivery. A Dorchester head only cleared the ball as far as Adaggio 12 yards from goal but he pulled his strike narrowly wide.

Three minutes later and the Magpies took the lead through Fogden. The midfield man received the ball from Nick Crittenden, burst forward down the left before cutting inside and curling a fine shot beyond McDonnell.

However, City were level within 60 seconds, the ball dropping to wing back Ward who unleashed an unstoppable strike from 25 yards which flew into Gareth Stewart’s bottom left corner.

The county town side almost regained their advantage in the 24th minute but saw Jamie Mudge’s 20-yard effort drift over the top.

Dorchester only had to wait another nine minutes before taking the lead once more and it was that man Fogden again.

Jamie Gleeson picked out Mudge in a good position and the Magpies’ top scorer fired in a low drive from 20 yards that McDonnell could only parry, and Fogden, quickest to react, slide in to poke the ball home.

Stewart made his first save of the afternoon shortly after, getting down low to hold on to Tom Kemp’s header.

Worcester were again on the attack moments later and saw Adaggio glance a header just wide following Dodd’s right-wing delivery.

Fogden was enjoying a lively game and set up Mudge two minutes before the half-time break only for the latter to see his shot saved by the feet of McDonnell.

City’s Oliver Barnes almost extended Dorchester’s lead with a misdirected header in his own penalty area. Luckily for the visiting defender, his nod down dropped wide of the left post.

At the other end, Stewart produced a fantastic stop to deny Adaggio in a one-on-one scenario before the visitors saw a cross-cum-shot come back off Stewart’s crossbar and fall to Ward who failed to gain sufficient power on the rebound.

Fogden went close to competing his hat-trick just past the hour mark but after bursting towards goal the midfielder lacked the finish to match and his shot bobbled wide.

Ronayne Marsh-Brown’s crucial block denied Dinsmore and then from the resultant corner Adaggio shot straight at Stewart from close-range.

Worcester were in the ascendancy and again Marsh-Brown had to be at his best to prevent Dinsmore before Adaggio and Craig Wilding both failed with efforts from distance.

Just when it looked as though the visitors might have found a leveller, Jermyn was on hand to clear off the line from Wilding’s header.

But the Magpies still remained a threat on the break and McDonnell had to be alert to prevent Mudge scoring with a clever chip.

Dorchester went agonisingly close to making the game safe with four minutes to go. Fogden was the chief architecture, raiding down the left before playing the ball inside to substitute Mitchell Nicholson who stepped over it for the oncoming Mudge to fire in a shot that McDonnell did well to keep out. The rebound fell kindly for Moss but his header hit the top of the bar.

However, in the final minute, the Magpies secured a deserved victory via Moss, who held off the attentions of Kemp before blasting the ball beyond the reach of McDonnell with his supposedly weaker left-foot.
