Magpies sunk by 'Stoke

Dorset Echoby Echo Reporter

Dorchester Town’s away-day woes continued yesterday after they went down at Camrose.

The Magpies have lost all four Blue Square South games on the road this season and they were punished on Bank Hoiday Monday by high-riding Basingstoke.

A rash challenge by keeper Ryan Northmore and poor marking at a set-piece eventually saw them undone despite a goal from Ashley Vickers late on.

Tom Mitchell was restored to the Magpies’ midfeld with Jamie Gleeson making way as the only change from Saturday’s draw with Bath City.

The game got off to a slow start but it was Basingstoke who were on top, passing the ball around well.

However, they were unable to find a way past the Dorchester defence in the opening stages, though Jahson Downes did fire a goalbound volley that was blocked by the face of Mitchell.

They then lost their way for a time, allowing the Dorset side to get a foothold in the game.

As a result, Mitchell had the first real shot of the match, hitting a volley on to the roof of the net after a scramble in the Town box.

David Pratt then had the best chance of the half following some good work by Downes, finding himself through on goal. However, his low shot was blocked by the legs of Northmore.

Seconds later, the Magpies were handed a good opportunity when Sean Hankin’s mistake allowed Ivan Forbes to cleverly lift the ball over Lewis Christon to create space for a shot – but the winger’s effort flashed over the bar.

Downes was causing problems whenever he got the ball and he hit a shot narrowly wide after another good run, but the match remained goalless at the break.

Dorchester made a good start to the second half, Matt Groves testing Ross Kitteridge with a shot from distance that the Town keeper was only able to hold at the second attempt.

A good move from the home side resulted in Gary Frewen hitting a low shot that forced Northmore into a diving save, while Forbes failed to make the most of a presentable shooting opportunity at the other end.

Downes then had a well hit-shot blocked, while Jide Ogunbote was denied by a good defensive header as Basingstoke put the pressure on their opponents.

Town took the lead on 70 minutes. A quick break saw Steve Laidler release Pratt and while the striker was denied by a tackle, he reacted quickly to beat Northmore to the ball.

The keeper brought him down and referee Eamonn Smith signalled for a penalty, which Pratt took himself. Northmore got a touch diving low to his left but was unable to keep the ball out.

Town continued to press, Ogunbote putting a shot from distance narrowly wide and Laidler forcing a save out of Northmore from an acute angle.

Lewis Christon then had to produce a fine tackle to prevent Phil Walsh getting a shot on goal and Dorchester had a decent spell but Town made it 2-0 six minutes from time.

Ogunbote heading home Tom Williamson’s corner at the far post. However, the visitors pulled a goal back a minute later. Kitteridge failed to claim a corner and assistant-boss Ashley Vickers’ header crept in just inside the post.

That ensured a nervous final few minutes but the home side held out to claim the three points.
