Moss on the brink
by
Ky Capel
Ryan Moss is on the verge of securing a third spell at Dorchester
Town.
The striker, who last left the Magpies in February, came on as
a second-half replacement in last night’s 4-1 defeat to AFC
Bourne-mouth for his third appearance of pre-season.
And boss Roy O’Brien is hopeful that Moss will soon sign
on the dotted line.
He said: “The situation has taken another step forward and
I think we’ve hit common ground now, so fingers crossed he’ll
put pen to paper in the next couple of days.
“We can overcome his work commitments as his rota seems
to be in his favour. It’s just a case of signing the contract.”
Another forward to impress O’Brien was Jules Emanti, who
notched the Magpies’ consolation at the Jewson Stadium.
He added: “He’s a different type of striker and he’s
got something about him. I’ve seen him against Hamworthy,
where he scored two great goals, and I’ve seen him in this
game, where he scored again, so in total he’s played about
75 minutes and scored three goals.
“Maybe we’ll be looking to start him on Friday at
home to Torquay United.”
Asked about any other trialists who caught his eye, O’Brien
said: “Steve Devlin came on and is a very composed lad, he’s
got no fear either and that’s good to see.
“Neil Martin is a tidy left-back and I’ve seen things
that are different to what we have so I might have to do some more
grovelling to the chairman to see what we can do.
“I’ve got a couple of days to analyse what we have
and who I would like to offer something to, budget permitting.
But I’d like to go into next week’s training with my
starting XI and my subs.”
One man who did not feature last night was last season’s
number one Gareth Stewart. The county town chief added: “Gareth
was ill so he couldn’t play, he told me he was up all night
unwell but it was good to see Regan Coward back in goal again when
he came on.”
Despite being impressed by some of the Dorchester hopefuls, O’Brien
was less than happy with his side’s performance as a whole.
He said: “In previous games the lads have shown a lot more
commitment and work-rate than against Bournemouth. You can’t
ease off in any game, especially against a side two leagues above
you.
“It’s pre-season though and maybe the last few games
have taken a lot out of the lads.”
The Magpies’ defence was breached as early as the ninth
minute. A throw in was allowed to bounce in the home box and Brett
Pitman directed a header goalwards which Mark Ovendale was unable
to keep out.
The only other chances in a somewhat quiet first period also fell
Bournemouth’s way and saw Sammy Igoe head straight at Ovendale,
skipper Jason Pearce volley into the ground and over the top from
close-range, and Pitman force a save from the home keeper.
Half-time substitute Moss displayed great strength to shrug off
his man before nutmegging Cherries’ keeper Ryan Pryce, but
the goal was chalked off for offside.
The League Two outfit had the ball in the net three minutes later
and their effort stood.
Substitute Steve Lovell, the brother of Cherries’ boss Eddie
Howe, was left with just Ovendale to beat but the Magpies’ trialist
saved at his feet only for the loose ball to rebound off Gary Bowles
and fall to Lovell who made no mistake second time around.
However, the hosts reduced the deficit straight away as Emanti,
who came on at the break, stole in to clip the ball past Pryce.
The rush of goals continued with the Cherries restoring their
two-goal advantage. Lovell’s headed effort struck the foot
of a post and the loose ball cannoned off the retreating Ollie
Barnes – another home trialist – before falling into
the empty net.
The action subsided for only six minutes before the away side
grabbed a fourth – Pitman notching his second of the evening
with a 25-yard peach, which flew into the bottom left corner. |
