Clarets end party and Avenue record

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester Town did not give chairman Shaun Hearn a very happy birthday as they crashed to a 3-0 defeat at home to high-flying Chelmsford City.

The Magpies’ chairman was celebrating the day but would have been hoping for a result as a present, with Warren McBean, Ollie Berquez and Ricky Holmes denying him that and giving the Clarets a somewhat flattering victory.

However, the match was marred by the sight of Kyle Critchell being escorted off the field on a stretcher after a seemingly harmless incident when Ben Martin charged down the full-back’s shot.

Dorchester were unchanged from their 6-1 mauling of Basingstoke Town, although James Coutts returned to the bench in place of Ollie Barnes.

Anthony Finn nearly struck inside the opening four minutes when his free-kick deflected off the outstretched boot of Ryan Hill, but Regan Coward was sharp enough to dive to his right and claw the ball behind for a corner.

Josh Llewellyn fired the Magpies’ first warning shot with an off-target effort from long range but it was Chelmsford’s Ricky Holmes who went closest in the opening 10 minutes when he whipped a left-footed volley across Coward but just beyond the far post.

However, centre-half Gary Bowles went even closer to scoring his second goal in as many appearances when he headed against the underside of the crossbar from Steve Devlin’s right-wing corner.

It was not until the 36th minute but, soon after Coward had dived on Ollie Berquez’s header, Chelmsford took the lead through McBean, who made a brilliant run to latch on to Holmes’ incisive pass before calmly slotting home underneath Coward.

The Magpies’ goalkeeper had to parry away a stinging drive from Holmes as Chelmsford cranked up the pressure even more, but Nathan Walker headed on to the top of the bar at the other end after Mark Jermyn had hooked the ball into the box.

But it was City’s pressure that told in the first minute of stoppage time when Berquez scrambled the ball home from inside the six-yard box after Coward had blocked from McBean.

Right at the start of the second period, Neil Martin miscued a shot wide before the same player set up a glorious chance for Walker, who had an easy header from three yards but directed it straight at goalkeeper Ashley Harrison instead of into the net.

Ryan Hill’s ambitious free-kick from 30 yards was comfortably gathered by Harrison as the Magpies continued to dominate proceedings after the restart, but they suffered a major blow when Critchell was stretchered off after having a shot charged down by Martin.

The Magpies lost control of the game after that incident – despite reverting to a back three following the introduction of Coutts for Critchell – and Ricky Modeste shot into the side-netting at the other end in the 82nd minute, which was City’s first attempt of the half.

Nick Crittenden did shoot off target at the other end but it would only serve to be Dorchester’s last desperate throw of the dice and Holmes finished the match off in stoppage time with a left-footed cracker after the Magpies failed to clear.
