Dover defeat

Dorset Echoby Echo Reporter

Dorchester Town fell to their second defeat inside seven days as they were on the wrong end of a 4-1 result at newly promoted Dover Athletic on Saturday.

Town manager Roy O’Brien made just two changes to the side which was beaten 3-0 by Staines Town on Tuesday, with Ashley Vickers and Nick Crittenden recalled to the starting line-up.

Dorchester made a slow start to the game and found themselves camped in their own half for the first half hour.

The Magpies were lucky not to go a goal down in the opening minute, as Dover’s Adam Birchall broke through the visitors’ defence and fired a shot, which was well-saved by goalkeeper Ryan Northmore.

Defender Gary Bowles and Northmore kept Dorchester in the game as they denied Dover two clear-cut opportunities.

First, Sammy Moore’s shot was cleared off the line by Bowles’ goal saving sliding challenge, which was followed by Northmore clawing the ball to the safety from Shaun Welford.

However, Dorchester’s impressive last ditch defending was brought to an end when Dover took the lead through Birchall on 15 minutes.

Despite conceding an early goal, Dorchester responded well and almost restored parity from the restart.

Mark Jermyn instigated a well-worked move down the right wing which saw his cross met by Phil Walsh, who forced a save from Dover goalkeeper Lee Hook.

Dover continued to dominate the possession and piled the pressure on the visitors, who were forced to clear the ball off the line once again.

This time Vickers was on hand to clear the danger and keep the Magpies in the game.

Seven minutes before the break Dorchester showed their attacking credentials by scoring an equaliser against the run of play.

Dover’s defence failed to clear their lines which allowed Jamie Gleeson to poke the ball past Hook in the Whites’ goal. The Magpies made a better start to the second half and caused Dover’s defence a number of problems, but any clear-cut chances were few and far between.

The visitors came close to taking the lead just after the hour when Bowles shot wide from six yards with just Hook to beat. With Dorchester heading towards a well earned draw, the home side were handed a life-line with a free-kick on the edge of the area with 14 minutes remaining.

Nicky Southall stepped up and fired the ball into the net.

Any hopes of salvaging a point from the game soon evaporated when Birchall managed to beat the offside trap to score his second of the game in the 90th minute.

To make matter worse for the visitors they conceded a fourth goal when Welford sent a fine header past Northmore with the last action of the game.
