Return for Ryan?

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester Town boss Roy O’Brien will do his “utmost” to bring Ryan Moss back to the Jewson Stadium.

The striker, who left the club in February but was still the Magpies’ joint top scorer last season with 12 goals, played 45 minutes in Saturday’s 3-2 friendly defeat to Eastbourne Borough.

Moss is currently unattached after his contract at Bashley ended and O’Brien is keen to swoop.

He said: “Ryan puts himself about and is a real handful. We will do our utmost to get him here and I believe he wants to come back.

“I’m sure we can come to some sort of agreement to accommodate him. He’s a thorn in defenders’ sides and he’ll be a massive plus.”

Fellow forward Matt Groves notched the Magpies’ first goal of pre-season but prior to that a Mark Jermyn own goal and a close-range effort from Matt Hurley gave Blue Square Premier Eastbourne a 2-0 lead.

Gary Elphick made it 3-1 before trialist Steve Devlin, formerly of Holt United and Wincanton Town, added a consolation for the hosts.

Of the display, O’Brien added: “The game has been a long time coming and the lads were itching to play. We conceded three goals but the result was irrelevant – it was about the performance.

“The lads need a bit of work on their fitness but I was pleased with how we applied ourselves. Overall we played okay.”

Other trialists to feature were goalkeepers Mark Ovendale and Gustavo, former Magpie defender Ryan Hill, ex-Sherborne Town striker Phil Ormerod, winger Ben Wood and former Yeovil Town Youth midfielders Harry Montacute and Harry Nodwell.

O’Brien said: “Phil Ormerod came on and was a handful while Steve Devlin, who I’ve watched before and heard a lot about, is a tenacious player and took his goal well.

“We’ve got a game at Hamworthy United tomorrow night and hopefully we’ll see more of what the trialists can do.”

O’Brien, who adopted a 3-5-2 formation, saw his side go behind after just six minutes.

An Eastbourne corner was not dealt with, Ross Treleaven had time and space to cut the ball back across goal and Jermyn could only slice into his own net.

Nick Crittenden tested the fingertips of former Weymouth keeper Danny Knowles on the quarter hour but the Magpies fell further behind six minutes later.

Neil Jenkins’ teasing free-kick delivery was only parried by former AFC Bournemouth gloveman Ovendale and the incoming Hurley lashed home.

Dorchester reduced the deficit as Groves marked his comeback with a goal. Darren Baker was penalised for handball in the penalty area and Groves made no mistake from the spot, blasting the ball straight down the middle.

The final action of the half saw Knowles save well from Ivan Forbes in the 38th minute.

Ashley Vickers was almost punished for a lapse in concentration four minutes into the restart, but substitute keeper Gustavo pushed aside Andy Atkin’s fierce drive.

Forbes, who spent the majority of last season sidelined by a knee injury, had the Dorchester faithful fearing the worst again when he went down needing treatment.

Luckily, he got back to his feet after a couple of minutes and was subsequently substituted as a precautionary measure.

Gustavo’s handling ability was not the most convincing but he did make another decent stop from ex-Terra Simon Weatherstone.

However, the Portuguese stopper was beaten from the resultant corner as Elphick headed home.

The Magpies pulled another goal back in the 75th minute. An in-direct free-kick for an apparent back pass, just six yards from the visitors’ goal, was laid off by Gary Bowles for Devlin to fire through the onrushing Borough bodies.

The hosts though were unable to find an equaliser in their first pre-season friendly.
