Magpies hit by Spitfires strike

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester failed to hold on to their early advantage as late goals in each half saw Eastleigh claim the spoils at the Jewson Stadium.

The county town side were ahead after just five minutes courtesy of Ryan Moss’ sixth goal of the season and they maintained their lead when penalty king Regan Coward saved Brett Poate’s 15th minute spot-kick.

But Eastleigh refused to give in, eventually drawing level moments before the break via Peter Adenyi.

And the Spitfires landed the sucker-punch in the 80th minute as Richard Gillespie headed in what proved to be the winner.

Dorchester’s Ian Selley recovered from the head wound that forced him off in the first half of Saturday’s win at Havant & Waterlooville to take his place in an unchanged starting line-up. The midfielder’s head though, remained bandaged as a precaution.

The Spitfires started former Magpie Jamie Brown and ex-Terra Tony Taggart with another former Weymouth man, Trevor Challis, taking a place on the bench.

Prior to kick-off there was a minute’s silence in memory of Dorchester-based soldier Philip Allen, who died on Saturday while serving in Afghanistan.

A heavy mist covered much of the Jewson Stadium but the game went ahead, much to the Magpies’ delight as Moss put them ahead with only five minutes gone.

The hosts successfully defended an Eastleigh corner before venturing up the other end. Andre McCollin’s long pass was missed by a visiting defender and Moss did well to finish from an acute angle – blasting beyond keeper Steve Arnold.

The Magpies though, were then forced on the back foot and after Coward – October’s Player of the Month choice – saved from Brown, the young gloveman faced his fourth penalty of the season.

Ashley Vickers was the offender in the box but Coward performed heroics to keep out Poate’s spot-kick – the third penalty he has saved this campaign.

Gillespie shot wide from 20 yards while Gary Bowles was in the right place to block Taggart’s drive.

Moss was presented with a great chance to double the home side’s lead on the half hour but after latching on to Selley’s ball forward, the home forward shot straight at Arnold.

The Spitfires chalked up nine corners in the first period to Dor-chester’s one, and the visitors’ pressure finally paid off as Adenyi equalised a minute before the break.

Poate’s corner from the right was not dealt with and Adenyi fired in from 10 yards.

In fact, the Magpies would have been behind at half-time had Coward not made a superb save from Brown’s header moments later.

Visibility improved dramatically for the start of the second period but the outlook remained bleak for the home side with Gillespie heading over and Taggart nodding wide with the goal at his mercy.

In a rare Dorchester attack, Selley’s 60th minute free-kick was met by the head of Phil Walsh but Arnold was well placed to collect.

Matt Groves replaced McCollin on the hour and six minutes later the substitute linked well with Moss, but the latter shot straight at Arnold.

The Magpies were beginning to edge their way back into the match and after Taggart pulled a shot wide, Moss was left with a clean sight of goal. Once again though, the home striker found the hands of Arnold as opposed to the bottom corner.

Eastleigh substitute James Taylor did well to flick the ball into the path of Anthony Riviere on 72 minutes, but the midfielder volleyed wide of goal from the edge of the Magpies’ box.

Riviere produced a better attempt five minutes later only to see his low drive clip the outside of Coward’s right-hand post.

And the Magpies’ keeper was helpless once more as Eastleigh completed the comeback with 10 minutes to go. Jamie White whipped in a dangerous cross from the left and the unmarked Gillespie was left with the simple task of heading home.

Boss Roy O’Brien threw Walsh forward in an attempt to rescue a point but the closest they came was from a 35-yard pile-driver by Selley that unfortunately was too close to the keeper.
