Away-day relief for Magpies

Dorset Echoby Dev Ward

Dorchester bagged their first away win of the season at the eighth time of asking with debutant Steve Devlin and makeshift defender Phil Walsh leading the side to glory.

Midfielder Devlin, who joined the club less than a week ago, made his mark after just four minutes while Walsh, playing alongside Ashley Vickers at the heart of the defence, found the net just three minutes later in a devastating opening.

However, the county town side had Regan Coward to thank after he kept out his second penalty of the season.

Maidenhead though, eventually found a way back into the game courtesy of Will Hendry but the Dorset Magpies held out to loft themselves out of the Blue Square South drop-zone.

The game started with Maiden-head putting pressure on the visitors. However, after only four minutes a Mark Jermyn cross was flicked on by Matt Groves with Devlin on hand to finish at the back stick.

And Dorchester capitalised on their early advantage when Groves won a free-kick on the edge of the United box and the resulting free-kick from Jamie Gleeson was headed in by Walsh at the far post.

The away side enjoyed a spell of good possession until Maidenhead created their first real chance on 16 minutes.

A Hendry cross was met by Bradley Quamina, who forced a good save from Coward.

The contest then became somewhat scrappy but debutant Devlin was working hard for the Magpies and his good work nearly paid off when a ball to Jermyn resulted in the Magpies going close – Saroya coming to the rescue to block Jermyn’s shot.

On 29 minutes the game appeared to turn in Maidenhead’s favour when Vickers brought down Kieron St Aimie in the box, however, Coward saved well to his bottom left from Saroya’s spot-kick.

Maidenhead finished the half the stronger of the two teams with Staforde Palmer firing a long range effort wide and then heading over a Bobby Behzadi cross.

The Berkshire Magpies came out for the second half fired up but home captain Mark Nisbet was perhaps fortunate to only receive a booking for his tackle on Ryan Moss.

Chris Tardif though, pulled off a good save from Walsh’s header from the resulting set-piece.

The action flowed from end to end with both sides enjoying chances – St Aimie firing wide before Moss drew a decent stop from Tardif.

Dorchester went close again when stand-in centre-half Walsh headed the ball against the crossbar.

At this point Maidenhead resorted to long-range shots in an attempt to break down the visiting defence.

And they got their reward on 71 minutes as Hendry gave the home side hope. He cut inside and fired a bullet beyond Coward and into the far corner.

Substitute Kieran Knight then went close with 13 minutes to go before a long kick up field by Tardif bounced over Harry Montacute and put in replacement forward Alex Wall. However, with his first touch, the home striker fired wide with just Coward to beat.

With only minutes to go Hendry went even closer, this time hitting the woodwork from the edge of box with another powerful strike.

And the home side almost snatched an equaliser deep into injury time when Brown’s cross fell to Wall, but he headed just wide.
